How do I remove Air Bags on a 1996X???

I have a 1996 X And I want to remove the airbags from the passenger dash and the steering wheel! Any one have tips on how to do so? Please post or PM me.

The steering wheel is pretty simple. Just pull the fuse, then remove the two screws from the side of the steering, pull bag away and unplug the harness.

I personally like to be out of the way of the airbag when doing this. Probably overkill, but better than a bag in my face.

Not sure on the dash one, never removed one.

The passenger airbag is easy too. Open the glove box, squeese the sides to allow it to swing down to the floor, and you'll see two bolts looking up in the dashboard hole towards the airbag. Remove those and the airbag will come forward.

Before doing any removing, disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes before doing anything because of the backup system for the airbags.

Removeing Air Bags

The driver side air bag I want to remove for a custom steering wheel. And the passenger side to install my Playstation 2 in the dash with some modification. Because right now my PS2 is located in the back of my X next to my subs. I want to have it up front . And my changer takes up my console and the glove box is too small.

I'm curious about the law on this. I know there was some permission given for passenger turnoff switches by the feds, but if the dealer does it you have to get individual fed approval.. yada yada...

Can you do both sides? What if you get stopped by Barney Fife somewhere?

You can unplug both airbags if you want, and nobody would even know.

Can you do that while they are "live"? Is that how the dealer installable switch does it?

And does this light the SRS light on the cluster?

Yeah it will make the airbag symbol light up. I don't know why you'd want to disable them anyway.
