come on guys, i like really want to know.

someone has to have done this before

Take the door panel off, and you probably need to put the window up. On my doors, there is a black matting stuck to the door, which probably deadens some sound. This might need to be peeled off and I would guess that the keypad is fairly easy to remove. There probably are just clips, screws or somethin'. I'm sure this is useless info, but it is a start.

I know it has to be done from the inside of the door if that helps. As I understand it, if you have the door apart it should be relatively easy as long as the window is out of the way.

I had the light out on the 96 X keypad when we bought it and I joined this site. I have looked for something about removing it and have never found anything in the last couple of years.
I would like to nominate you as the best guy to do it & write it up.
expo5.0 will go down in history.
I'm rooting for ya.....

I think it would be cool to change the light colors too in addition to painting it. Are they LED's, or just incandescent bulbs?

well guys, i was smart enough to take the door apart and reach the back of it before i posted- lol. i guess the truth is no one knows, and i really don't want to break it in half trying. we'll see

It is a horse shoe shaped slide clip.

If you have ever removed a door lock cylinder it is the exact same method of attaching.

The slide clip will be on the left end ( viewing it from the back ) slide it to the left ( duh )
lift out the left and forward. There is a tab on the right.
Follow the harness down the door and undo that by pusing the tab.
The harness will have a few clips here and there.

there is a big metal tab on the right and a little plastic tab on the left.

what i'm gonna do tomorrow morning is slide the tab on the left away from it (to the left from the inside) and then push that side forward? so that the side with the metal tab follows it out?

Duh, dyslexia fun can be !!!!!!!!!
Change that to right in my post.
Sorry man.

you are on the right track, slide the metal tab to the RIGHT
then the right should walk right out.
It really is cake.

has anyone else noticed that the keypads don't seem to be level? I saw this on mine for a while and I've been paying attention lately to other x's around town...either my head is crooked or most of them aren't level.

mine is either perfect or darn near.
