I have been looking for a good sounding exhaust system without spending too much money. All I really want is sound... so I was thinking about geting some glass packs.
What is your prefrence on good sounding exhausts or should I go with the glass packs? How much money do i have to spend?

Thanks

Tyler,

Glasspacks are cheap and loud. It all depends on what you want the vehicle to sound like.

I have a Dynomax Super Turbo cat back system and it cost me about $150 installed. It is slightly louder than stock, with a nice rumble. The muffler also has a lifetime warranty.

If you're looking for something more aggressive sounding, Flowmaster is a good choice. I'm not sure on their pricing, but I think it is a little more expensive than Dynomax.

Many choose Borla, but I think they are very pricey for what you get. I don't think that's what you are looking for.

There are a number of performance mufflers out there, Gibson, Bassani, Magnaflow, to mention a few. They all sound a little different. Any of these name brand systems are going to be more expensive than glasspacks, as well as more refined sounding, so it's up to you to decide.

I've never heard a 4.0 V6 with a glasspack muffler, so any opinion I have would be imagined. The good thing is that glasspacks are inexpensive, so if you don't like the sound, you're not out much money. They don't tend to last very long, so you definitely get what you pay for. The main thing is getting something that YOU are satisfied with.

Try talking to some muffler shops in your area, someone that deals in performance products rather than Midas or the other chains. A good independent shop ususally has some experience with custom systems. Gather as many opinions as you can, then form your own, because you are the one that will be driving it. Go ahead and get whatever you think you want, don't worry if it doesn't suit someone elses taste.

Let us know what you end up with.

Hey Tyler,
I have a Flowmaster II Cat-Back Exhaust system on my Explorer. It sounds pretty good. But if you're looking for the sound of a Mustang you won't find it from Flowmaster... at least not a Flowmaster II. I've heard the series 40's are suposed to be loud.

I think the Gibson's are suposed to be slightly louder than Flowmaster but I'm not certain. The muffler companies make different levels of sounding mufflers so I'd check around and find the level that suits your needs. I definatly reccomend that if you get a muffler to have a place that does performance upgrades MIG weld it on. I clamped mine up and well the clamps loosened up and I ended up spending money having someone else weld it up. That and when I got my muffler we had a hell of a time getting the pipes to match up and fit properly. The muffler shops have all the propper tools needed to install them.

For the money the high flow mufflers are definatly the way to go. You'll have a muffler that's gaurenteed for life, it'll sound good, you'll get better gas mileage and more seat of the pants excelleration. However if all you're looking for is sound, I'd go with a glasspack. I think the glasspack will probably sound decent on the Explorer. One of my friends has an F150 that he had Glasspacks on for a while and it was really loud and all he had in it was a 6 cylendar. (Straight six) His did fall off after a while and loose it's effectiveness though. I think NAPA may even make one. So check around. You can probably pick one up for pretty cheap. If you're looking for sound check out Kurtz Kustom Motorsports... They're link is on this site. They make an excellent high flow air filter that'll actually give you more sound too. I was shocked!! I highly reccomend them!! Good luck!! Defiantly let us know what you end up going with. (My Flowmaster was $200.)

Hey Tyler, don't do it!! I got them on mine and they are extrememly annoying inside, and they aren't all that great unless you want it to sound like one of those little Honda 4cyl. with the loud exhaust. I was thinking maybe going with the Flowmaster muffler. You can get a 40 series (loudest) with the Delta Flow Technology, and the interior resonance goes down a whole lot, but the exterior sound still stays pretty loud, I would reccomend getting that. But definately don't get the glasspack.

Yeah, Rock is right. I know a guy running dual "thrush" glasspacks on his 3.0L Ranger. He said he got 'em from summit for $30 apiece . They do sound like one of those jap 4 bangers on steriods. He claims that he likes
the sound, but my flowmaster 40 shames it pretty bad in the sound department. But of course he has a 3.0L, not a 4.0.

I also just thought of something... A guy I worked with this summer bumped into me(not literally) somehwere, and He started up his 89 Ranger with a 3.0 and boy oh boy. His sounded nice. He told me he just had a shop around town dual it out with no mufflers at all, and his sounded great. A whole lot better than my 4.0. I don't know if that'd go too well at the emissions place, but if it doesn't really matter, cause I've heard that anything past the cats will be fine, so... Anyone know if this setup with no muffler would be legal? Anyways, if it is, I might do it. Hope that helped some.

Hey thanks for all the info. I am gong to check out the "no muffler deal" sounds cheap.... that just might be the way to go. If not I am going to look into the flowmaster.

Thanks again
