You shouldnt need to remove the transfer case in order to remove the shift motor. The shift motor I think is held on by three 10mm bolts to the back of the transfer case. Here is a thread on how to rebuild the shift motor:

And it would be impossible to drive the vehicle w/o a transfer case - you wouldnt be able to connect the driveshafts ;)

It will not come completly out without taking pins out of the connector so I would do the repair under the vehicle. You will need a security torx bit to take the motor apart after you drop it down.

Can't you get to the rubber stop and contacts without dropping motor by just taking the three torx screws out? I'm thinking the last time I did one I thought to myself that I didn't need to go threw all that just to get to the rubber stop.
