so I have a 96 4.0 ohv w/ auto transmission. when it shifts 1-2 its firm and crisp, 2-3 feels like im using the brakes for a split second and then a bump and some noise. 3-4 is perfect with no noise and smooth as glass. the downshifting seems good exept for 2-1 when its perhaps the worst.. rough and a loud bump noise while I come to a stop.

The transmission has been rebuilt recently and is under warrenty, I just bought this rig 1 week ago so Im not used to explorers.. wondering if this is normal? How does your 4.0 ohv explorer shift?

You're better off posting this on the tranny and transfer case forum, there are some petty sharp guys there.

How many miles are on it since it was rebuilt? Did you check the fluid level? Do you have the shifting problem when it is cold, hot, or all of the time? Does this problem happen when you have it in 4H, 4L, Auto, etc? Did you have these problems before the rebuild, immediately after, or just recently?

2500 miles since rebuild, fluid level looks fine and is very clean looking, I have the shifting problem no matter what cold or hot auto 4h 4L. I didnt own the explorer till after the rebuild, the former owner didnt even know that anything was wrong and transfered the 8 month warrenty over to me. I went to the shop that did the rebuild and the assured me it was " normal " and said if anything breaks its covered.
