How hard would it be to hook my own car alarm In my 2000 explorer? Nothing fancy. It would be siren, alarm goes off when door is open(interior lite comes on) maybe duel shock. flash flights maybe keyless entry but seeing how its already available 2 remotes dont bother me for now. Not sure I would even worry about starter diabling.

Would this be an easy job? I've hooked up some amps and radio in my previous car but dont want to fry my electric system. It can't be that hard can it or would I be better off going to circuit city and getting one put in.

Any recommends? Not looking for anything real expensive or facy as everything is stock. I know I know :-) May put my system in next summer

Thanks for the comments

I have been wanting to install my own too!! Do not know enough about so have not done it yet.

Im wondering about any gotchas.

I'm pretty sure I can run wires from heh alarm to the fuse box inside using some clips that go on blade fuses from radio shack. I've hooked up an alarm to an old aerostar before and it wasn't too hard plus i didnt care as it was old :-)

Were would be a good mounting spot for the siren and unit if anyone knows or have a website that would be great. I could go to walmart and install the one wire thing but I want a little more functionaliy.

You could just get a non-invasive car alarm. (ie one that is not attached to the vehicle in any way. I had a Bulldog Alarm system on my old Plymouth Sundance, and all it had was one wire to the possitive battery terminal and it bolted onto a wheel well under the hood. It had a dual shock sensor and a voltage sensor as well. It also talked, which was both annoying and cool. And it LOUD. Its been awhile since I bought it but I think it was 100.00 when I bought it and I seen something close to it in Walmart not long ago for 50.00. Not the best system, but it does a decent job. Oh and the shock sensor was adjustable, so I would just place the alarm in to adjustment mode and not touch the car. SUPER SENSITIVE!! heh I had loud stereos set if off.

hehe loud and annoying huh haha
so if someone opened the door it would go off?
I may look into that but I think i rather have the chirp. I had an alarm that talked and yeah it got on my nerve.
I think I want something that can flash the lights and honk the horn also or atleast flash the lights

You might want to look at JC whitney, I bought an alarm for my other car there for like $60. I think its a bulldog. It had a bunch of wires, and you had to hook up the ignition, a constant pos. supply, the siren, tap into the parking lights, and hook up the siren. You can also hook up the door locks too. Im not sure how hard it would be to hook it up to the X, but it cant be terribly hard. I mounted the siren under the hood to the top of the wheelwell.

I installed one for my '91 a long time ago. It really wasn't too bad, but I think that a company now makes an alarm and has optional harnesses to plug into the vehicle. I don't remember names, but I saw it in Crutchfield. So far, the factory alarm in my '97 has been good enough for me.

I have a CrimeGuard 745i3 from Crutchfield... For $199, it came with all of the bells and whistles... All relays, keyless entry, siren, dual stage shock sensor, dual zone motion sensor, glass breakage sensor, starter kill, valet... I like it, it has a lot of cool features. One of my favorites is that it will automatically lock the doors when all of the doors are closed and the engine is started. Then when you shut the engine off, it unlocks the doors. It also has dome light illumination for when you disarm the system... It will automatically arm itself 30 seconds after you shut the truck off and close all of the doors (assuming you have gotten out of the car - If you just shut the car off and sit in it, it does nothing), and it will automatically arm itself 1 minute after closing the doors if it was previously armed (Say you went out to the car when it was already parked, disarmed it to get something out of it, and then walked away but forgot to arm it again).

Crutchfield did not have any harnesses for it for my '94, but installation was still very straightforward. The only part that took more than one try to get working right was the door locks because I did not understand the schematic at first and just half-assed it. I also bought a paging system for it that is a great addition, IMO. It works within about 1/4 mile radius from the car and if the alarm goes off for any reason, or the first stage shock sensor gets set off (That does not activate the alarm - just 3 warning chirps - but I'd like to know if someone smacks the car or something), then I get paged and know about it. Great for times when you are too far from the truck to hear an alarm. It also has some basic functions like a clock, vibrate/audible mode, alarm clock, and range indicator... It has a picture of a car on it and will flash different parts or make different animations and vibrate differently or emit different tones depending on what aspect of the alarm was set off. That was $129 for the paging system, and it will work with any alarm as far as I know... But you will get limited functionality with it when using it with alarms that have fewer sensors.

Basically, my first stereo system got stolen and the one I replaced it with is probably worth about the same as my truck by itself, so I went all out :p

I have installed a few of the Crimeguard 3series (325i, 328i) over the years and have been very pleased with them. IMHO, they are the best bang for the buck, $99.

I may looking into the crimeguard series for $99. $300 plus in more than I want to spend. I don't have my system installed yet,no fancy wheels or anything like that and I don't park in bad areas or unlit. Not alot of car thefts around here but you may get hit for a booming system though. Whatever I'm going to get I'm going to also wire in my neons to flash
