Finally go the console (from a 2000 Explorer Roll-over) installed in my '94 Ranger. Sweet! But, when power was applied it read "52*f CAL " and scrolled through all the directions. Is it a time thing or does it need some type of input to read correctly? Thanks! Fred

I don't think I can answer your question, but I am interested in doing the same thing you did to your Ranger to my 95 Explorer. I looked at a few overhead consoles and every one that I took off had a portion of the headliner missing so it attached directly to the metal roof above it. How did you install one in your truck?? Did you have to cut the headliner out to mount it? I really don't want to go tearing into my headliner to get a console. Did you take any pictures during or after the install?? I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

Was it 52 degrees farenheit at the time? If so, the compass needs calibrating. I'll look in my manual, but you have to push a couple of buttons (or maybe hold the "mode" button 'til CAL comes up?)and drive around in a circle for it to find magnetic north...

o yea, and you have to enter in the "zone" you're in so it can compensate for the difference between true and magnetic north..

Hmmm

I tried holding the mode button (like setting a preset station on the radio) when it slewed through "N" while facing North, no go. The temp was real close to 52*F. I understand the "zone" thing, just wondering how to do it.

Stephen S: The directions are at the http://www.rangerpowersports.com "MODS" page under explorer console install. It was easy and you already have the holes in the roof pillar (no drilling/slots to make!).

Thanks for your time, looking forward to it working properly.

owners manual

I had the same question about two weeks ago. The owners manual explains which zone you are in. I think you have to hold the button down until you see CAL. Then drive in a circle until it calibrates.

Thanks a bunch Fredness. I checked your link and found the mods page, but when I tried searching for explorer console install, it kept giving me an error. No biggie, I just figure the site is down or whatever. I'll try again later. Thanks for the help. If I can find a console, maybe I can install one in my truck too.

Where are you from? I will get the calibration number from the book. All you do is hold the mode button down until you see CAL blink, then drive in a circle for about a minute. It will calibrate itself at that point and the CAL will go away.

Got it!

A friend at work just got a 2000 Explorer and I photocopied the 5 pages on the console. Thanks! Fred

Did anyone else see the wire description regarding the Grey/Black Vehilcle Speed Sensor wire to the overhead console? "Its purpose is so the thermometer compensates for the wind chill factor." Pardon the pun, but COOL.

I saw that wind chill factor bit in the wiring too and I agree, it is pretty neat. I didn't think theuy took that into consideration when Frod designed it.

I've been wanting to do this for along time, but I can't find a console (some junk yard wanted $500 for one). I have a 93 Explorer Sport and I'm curious if it has all the mounting holes and whatnot. Hopefully I'll find an overhead console. :)

I'm wondering the same thing. I have a 95 with no console, but are the mounting holes already there under the headliner or will I have to cut them?? I'm looking for a console too.

I've been told by a Ford dealer that I have all the wiring and the bracket (might need a $10 bracket) already in my truck (he didn't look at it, he said it is there).

I just have to luck out and find a console, and I'm not having any luck.

Quick, now that is great if we already have the wiring in the roof. That means much less work, once I find a console. I'm not having any luck finding one either. I'm still working on it.
