depends, When you press the pedal and the truck doesnt stop, its time for new ones...he he Just kidding, Ibelieve its about every 10,000on pads, right?

put new pads on my 95 sport when it hit 35,000 miles. back brakes still look good. this is the longest i have ever had pads last on a vehicle. after having many gm vehicles that needed pads around 20,000 miles im pretty happy.

It totally depends on where and how you drive. If you tow a lot more than average, drive in nothing but stop and go traffic, or have a lot of hills your brakes life will be somewhat less than normal. My daily commute involves about 12 miles of city stop and go traffic and 18 miles of freeway and highway each way. Five or Six out of town trips a year and two cross country tips. I replaced all my pads at 50K miles. I probably could have gone another 10K before I would have been forced to replace them, however I had a coupon for Performance Products and knew I would be needing pads soon. I bought their Extreme Performance pads. When I removed my wheel to check them out, they were worn enough and I figured at 50K, I didn't mine replacing them now as opposed to waiting a few more months. If your driving conditions are similar to mine, expect about 50K.

I was actually pretty impressed with mine, they lasted about 40k (they were replaced at 39k during routine maintenance and they were right on the verge of needing replacement). I had to replace the pads and the rotors, but even so I think 40k is pretty good for a vehicle this heavy and the way I drive.

They wear out twice as fast on Tamiami

I'm at 77,000 km on my first set of front disk pads and still have plenty left. Rear shoes replaced around 50,000km due to fouling with axle fluid when a rear axle seal failed, but they still had plenty of life left in them at that point.

Previous vehicle was a Buick, which I owned from new and sold at about 75,000 km to buy the first XLT. The original pads still had plenty of life on them as well.

Both vehicles are manual transmissions, which I believe makes a huge difference to brake life. I've operated manual transmission vehicles for 20 years and always got great brake life.

Just replaced my front brakes at 41k miles. They were shot, the left front rotor wasbadly worn. Fortunately, the rotors were saved by resurfacing.

I just had all my brake pads replaced and rotors resurfaced at 39k miles because they were squealing slightly. Ford "Quality Care" claimed all four pads were severely worn and the rotors were worn down pretty bad too. They weren't very straightforward about it and did it without my authorization after I took it in for a brake inspection only and refused to show me my old brake pads that they replaced. I got my oil change and tire rotation free and also a detail job out of the manager because they did it without me requesting it be done or my authorization to have it done and boy was I heated :). A few others here have said they've gotten around 40k miles out of theirs, so I'm feeling like there was some truth to it.

My pads only last 15k before they start to squeek really bad.
I bought brake pads that were guaranteed for life from Midas. So
when they wear out, I take it back in, they replace the pads free, and I pay $18 to have the rotors resurfaced. At 75k though, The rotors were warped enough that I had to replace them.

63,000 Miles

Ive had my explorer for almost 4 years now ,its a 98 XLT RWD, and everytime I check the brakes they've looked good to me untill recently. It differes on your drving habits, if you tow a trailer and how much weight you pull, and if you have a manual tranny or an automatic. But I hear some of the early model explorers have had brake problems.

It should be about ready for at least front brakes. Front brakes go pretty quick on Explorers due to their weight, you got about twice the life I did on my first set.

my mom had like 77k on her pads before they were changed on her camry. it looks like 40k miles are about average on the X since it is so heavy and beastly
