How long to transmission failure?

My 96 did the OD flashing thing a couple years ago. Turns out it will do that whenever it senses a shift that doesn't complete in a predetermined period of time (among other possible causes). All I did was reset the computer with an OBD II reader then change the fluid and filter. No problems since. I've got 225,000+ miles on the original engine and transmission with NO WORK besides normal routine maintenance. Mine has the 4.0l push rod engine. What a workhorse. The rest of the rig is definitely showing its age however...

I had the fluid and filter changed and the codes cleared but the message came back.....

Thinking about it, the message tends to occur when driving up hill. Perhaps the strain is making it do it?

I seem to remember the shop that did my fluid change mentioning they normally run the fluid a little higher than normal to help with issues. Might be worth checking around for your specific year / model.

The shop told me I need a rebuild. They checked the codes and the fluid level and it all seems to be in order.

I am going to drive it until it starts to slip or shows some more signs of impending failure. It may take it a while to fail. I probably will not head off on a long trip with it anytime soon though.

Does it have any symptoms besides the flashing O/D light, or does it seem fine to you while driving? Did you get the codes that the shopped pulled? If you have the codes you might be able to fix it yourself with a small hassle.

It does not have any symptoms other than the flashing light. I did not get the codes. I had an auto parts store pull the codes and they said it was solenoid B.

My Dads 02 had a full trans rebuild at 100km. (60k miles) $2500

my 2001 is at 147k and needs a rebuild and im doing an expiriment to see how long the transmission will last

After just completing the rebuild of my 4r55e this winter (forward clutch finally gave up at 229k), I found a problem with the wiring harness that you might want to look into. The harness that connects from the outside of the tranny to the shift solenoids goes through a plastic protector where it connects from one side of the VB to the other. Mine cracked and upon further inspection we found the insulation on the wires to have dried / cracked such that there was exposed wire.

You can check this without removing the transmission. Just have to remove the pan and pull the harness loose from the solenoids and look it over closely. I had to buy a new one at about $50.

haha my tranny just went out! after the flashing o/d light i had about 2-3 months on it.. then the grinding got lounder, then i lost first! all at 129k it happend right after i got my tranny fluid changed! FML so now i got a 2500.00 stereo and my expo doesent even move! i heard 2200 for a new one installed.. is that too much? how much is a good price for a good swap?
