I got my X out of the shop today and they said i need a new comp.....for $350!!! My dad can get one and put it in for $120, but it turns out I don't even need one. The FOrd dealer in town says I just need a new FUel Relay, $16. We'll see if that works.
ANyway, how much SHOULD a new computer be. Are there any aftermarket computers? I'd rather replace it with something that will give me better performance if I have to.

A Ford dealer telling you that you don't need the expensive part that another shop said you need? That's a first. No, there are no aftermarket computers. The chips you keep reading about plug into the back of your factory computer. I am sure that a new computer would be much more than $120 if gotten directly from Ford so at that price it is probably a good deal. Be aware that the computers have their own unique code so if you don't get one with the same code as yours it may not run right or it may not run at all. I don't know how important the codes is for the early '90s Explorers though. You might have to pay Ford $100 or so to reprogram the replacement computer with your original code.

Yeah the computer is a little over $200 i think but my dad gets some kind of a discount because of the company he is with. The people at the shop told me that all we had to do is just plug it up. If we do have to program it, can I program it to pull some more horsepower?

price

I dont know how the prices are for X's, but i used to have a probe and i needed a new computer. it was $800 for a rebuilt one. probe was cool but parts were too expensive. now i have the X.

I saw a comp out of a 96 on ebay the other day. Dont know if that will help you... but i thought i'd suggest it:p

At first, it sounded like you were buying one from a wrecking yard or something. If you are buying a new on, then they will probably need the code off your current computer. Provide them with it and you should get the proper computer in return. No you can't reprogram it yourself, Ford can. You can buy a performance chip for any computer you wind up with on your Explorer to up the performance a little. The better chip makers will also need your computer code as well.
