How much gas do I really have left?

I have an 86 Ranger with the 2.9L and maual trans. Since it goes past full, do I have more gas in my tank to be used if it is on the E-empty, on my guage. It does go past empty, so is their gas that can be used if my fuel gauge is on E?

In my explorer, when the check gage light comes on I have about 2 1/2 gallons left.

My gauge is all screwy. When I fill it it goes right to full but I can go about 200 miles to half a tank and in around 50 miles it will go from 1/2 to nearly empty. And I know that when I get to about 1/8 tank I got maybe 3-4 gallons left.

Any light has yet to come on. I think my guage is screwy too, I can drive 200 miles on full, and on little short trips, it will go down a 1/16 to 1/32 every trip. Oh well, I'll just fill it when it gets close
