Realworld numbers! I realize companies claim their products will give you certain number of HP. But not really.

I have a few mods done to my truck, but would like to know roughly what they have all given?

Apten Chip
Force II cat back 50 series
K&N intake kit
BBK 66mm T B

I doubt the above mods have given me a total of 200HP from stock(160). Im looking to get 200HP, but im not willing to fork out the cash for a S/C or T/C.

What other mods are out there, which might help me achieve 200HP?

Thanks

You probably have something like 180-185 at the crank. If the chip is really good, maybe 190.

You could get a larger MAS, but it wouldn't help enough for the $300 cost. Any other cheap and easy bolts-on elude me at the moment.

How about a B&M electronic shift improver? $30, easy to install, and good for tranny life and feel. Also, if you don't have one get an aux tranny cooler.

And don't worry about hp numbers. What matters is how you like driving the truck and how much you think it needs. Also, throttle response matters too, which your mods helped out a lot.

One more thing: peak numbers aren't everything either. You mods have widened and flattened your power curves, giving you more power across the board. While you may only have gained 20 or so peak hp, you may have gained 40 at other RPMs.

I have similar mods, i think i have 180 at the wheels. See if you throttle cable has any slack, and take up the slack with a spacer, it helps a lot with the feel of the response. It could also ensure you are reaching wide open throttle. With me having all the mods you plan on having... I notice a huge improvement over stock. It is fun to be able to whoop on hondas instead of get beat by semis. The power feels very un-consistant though. Sometimes it accelerations 0-60 in a lil under 10 sec, other times it takes more than 12 sec. It seems like you have all the fairly inexpensive (<300) bolt-ons covered though.

yeah, sounds like probably about 180 hp...... that do you really plan on doing with your truck? want a dragseter to accelerate really fast or want good hiway mileage? you can make other modifications to other parts of the truck that will allow some major improvements.... my friend has a fullsize k5 blazer and it has 38" tires and can tow a trailer with a weight of about 14 tons..... he only has a 350 engine, but the rest of the truck is set up for towing and has upgraded axles etc.....

Thanks for the replys guys. 180-185 isnt bad I guess.

The Explorer is my daily driver and I would just like to give it some more power and better acceleration. The chip helped big time, helped smoothed out the engine. Which felt very rough and had the hardest time trying to figuare out what it was.

Im not looking to race the Ex, just looking for better performce, (it allways felt sluggish) :( Better fuel economy.

Btw Alec, I was looking into getting that shift kit. For $30, ya cant beat it, I guess?

Shift kit is next! :D

what again is a shift kit. where can i pick one up and is it easy to install? already had to replace the tranny once, anything to help it out would be great. thanks

I also recomend the B&M shift kit, its a good deal, although you may not need it if the shifts were firmed with you chip. Also, lowering helps the feel of the ex a lot, even if it is just an inch. You can do it yourself for around $30 + an allignment.

Here are a couple more suggestions:

TB Spacer
synthetic fluids throughout
replace motor driven fan with an electric one

Good luck.....

The only way to really tell is to have a before and after dyno test. The early modelExplorer was factory rated at 160 HP, very few had thatm most came in much lower at about 145 - 150 HP.

Like Alex said .....
How does it feel and drive? If your happy that's what matters.

Some little things you might do is some heat protection around that K&N filter and give it a good source of cold air.

The next set of mods start to be costly and don't really gain lots of HP.

A larger MAF will help response and drivability, but won't add to HP that much, It will help you get all you can out of your 66mm TB.

A set of headers would give you the next biggest gain.

You can also bolt on a supercharger, but it will cost bigtime.

Nitro might be a consideration for those "moments" when you just have to smoke the guy next to you.

A lower cost mod is to change your gearing. Go to a lower gear ratio in the rear end and you will launch off the line much faster, but you don't make any HP. and gas milage suffers because overall you will run at higher RPM's.

Not 180 at the wheels, more like 180 at the crank. And your 0-60 is probably somewhere in the high 7s - low 8s.

Personal preference, I don't recommend these. You could go to synthetic, but I wouldn't if your motor is older and/or you're worried about possible leaks.

I was un-aware that explorers were rated low. I guess I would only have like 180 at the crank. hmm I want to redo my 0-60 times, I was getting just below 10. 8 sounds better though, how do you figure it would be 8 for me alec?

Cause that's about what mine was with those mods.

Alphabets, Jegs has the BM shiftkit if you're interested.

Lets see...
intake, cat-back, apten chip, BBK T/B, shift kit, i think thats all the noticeable things. Is that what you had when you were getting 7-8 sec 0-60?
my friends acura legend is 0-60 in 7.

Pretty much what I had, yes. Consistent 0-60 times in the 7s.

The Acura weighs nowhere near what an Explorer weighs, thus, would most likely have a better time.

alec, i may very well be interested. like i said before, i don't know much about shift kits. are they easy to install and what will they do for the X? and who is jegs? thanks man.

There are multiple threads on the install of the BM shift improver.

''who is jegs''... thanks. i'll look into it.

Seems mine will cost $59.99. Not bad, though. I'm having my tranny serviced soon (flush/fill/filter change) so maybe I can have them install it then.
