i had a cracked head on my explorer cylinder 4. replaced both heads and everything was fine. the car ran for 2 day apprx with no problems. then i gave it WOT to merge onto the freeway. i heard a noise and then instant crap performance. SERIOUS misfire. i thought, great, here comes more work. i drove it home and it finally set a light (thank god, makes diag a little easier). i got a code for cyl 4 misfire, and lean on banks 1 and 2. weird. pulled off the valve covers and found the pushrod for the exhaust valve for cyl 4 had popped out of the rocker cup!!! this obviously caused the misfire and possibly also diluted the intake air coming in due to the constantly closed exhaust valve causing the lean condition.
ive actually read about this on this forum (searched for 15 mins but couldnt find the thread again) and thought to myself, the guy must of screwed up, but now i know it wasnt his fault as i checked to make sure all the pushrods were in fine because of that thread and it happened to me. my questions is, how?
i assume a loss of oil pressure on the lifter and thus too much play causing the pushrod to come loose? or is it possible the valve stuck? anyone have any idea? i would like to fix this before it happens again
