I have a 94 ex XLT version 4x4 antilock breaks.
I took my tire off to look at breaks and I know they need them but I couldn't figure how to take the caliper off. No one bolt on the back to loosten and slip the roter and caliper off. Plus 4 weel drive is new to me. Someone told me I hade to take the whole assembly and have it pressed off at a machine shop?
Ended up taking it to Sears. They said new pads, rotors, and shoes! I just hade the shoes replaced by them less than 7 months ago!!!!!! They told me it would be preventative matienance and with out any paper work proving they changed it they would have to charge me more. They said $553 for all three and labor?! That sounds incredibally high, I thought about doing it myself but I didn't know if I would have to repack the bearings, (I don't know how to do that) and the parts cost 217 from O'Riley each with lifetime warrenty, pads rotors and shoes. Any help on how to change is greatly appriciated along with time frame I'm looking at and any speciality tools.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Blake

Don't let a mechanic rip you off!!!!!

Doing the brakes on your Ex is really quite simple. For new rotors, pads and shoes, you should pay around $100, all brand new. I could tell you how to do the repair step by step, but I think your best bet is to go out and buy yourself a $10 Haynes manual. This will give you a pretty accurate description of how to handle the job.

Take your time and do the job right! Don't skimp on any parts or quality of your work. You will be happy with your results. Good Luck!!

I agree with irtySanchez. A good quality of Front rotor cost me $59. They also have prices below that. Pads will cost you $40 bucks and up depending on the quality you want. Front brakes is much easier to change than rear brakes. Once the upper and lower caliper bolts are out, you can easily slide the whole thing out (going upward of course) then the rotor with a little bit or harder banging with a hammer to loosen the rotor so you could pull it out. Once it's out, replace it with a new rotor. Now the pads, remove the old pads, you should have a tool to push the caliper piston in, replace with a new pads. Put everything back and you're done. The only difference with the rear (I'm not sure about your X's Year) is the hand/parking brakes. With mine I have to backed off my parking brakes using a special tool (which looked like a bent screw driver) so I could pull out the rotor. Good luck. First buy the manual it will help you a lot.

Nonoy-

I belive your front brakes are different than Blakes.
The 94 ex uses a different setup than your 97. The calipers are held on by slide pins, noy bolts.

I just installed ART Slotted rotors on my 94 X this weekend. They cost me $300 for the front rotors, with pads(included shipping). $40 for a new rear drum, $35 for rear shoes, & $3.99 for brake fluid. That's $379.99 in parts. High quailty parts. The rotors are what everone recomends. They are very good. My X stops ALOT better now. You could buy all the parts, & then just pay the labor to install them. If they are going to charge you over $500, you better get some high quailty parts. You can do them yourself, BUT if you are not comfortable doing it, the best way is to have someone else do it for you. See what real shops would cost you. I feel sears is more of a tire/shock place, not brakes. Do stay away form those places that advertise the $49.99 brake specials. These will do, but will need to be done again in 6 months, & they use VERY cheap parts.

thanks

Got them changed with the help of a friend of mine.
I spent $214 on the parts (lifetime warrenty on all, even rotors). I appriciate the help!
Ps what is this "by a Hanes manuel "?
when I asked about manuals I found most replies said to save the $ and ask you guys?!!!
Thanks a million though really I've been really helped out, I've got a few other questions but they'll have to wait.

Where did you buy them? What brand name/type of pads were included?

Thanks,

I agree with (D)irtySanchez..(damn that's funny)
Get the Manual..It's ten or fifteen bucks and definitely worth it. You will have ALL the steps to do whatever you want..save you alot of time, money and grief.

Just to let ya know, when I was registering, I didn't realize that I missed the D key, resulting in my mispelled screen name.
