i started my tune up the other week and got 5 out of 6 plugs swapped. the one that gave me the biggest problem is the one on the pass side near the firewall. theres a box in the way which looks like it has ac lines running into it and there jsut isnt enough room to shove my hand in there let alone a rachet. truck is an 01 sport with a 4.0

Jack the front of the truck up and take the passenger side tire off, you should be able to get it through the wheel well.

exciting, thanks alot, gotta admire ford for putting something infront of almost every plug lol

#1 Plug Removal

Just did the plugs on my 2001 Exploder Sport with the 4L SOHC. Absolutley no room to work. The engrs who design this stuff should be forced to work on them!
I removed the front pass side wheel and used a 5/8 plug socket with a 11/16" box wrench on the end. Coming in from the bottom is a bit different in changing the plugs. #5 & #3 were pretty hard coming in from the top. I have small hands and everything that ever was on a Snap on and MAC tool truck.

Use a 3/8 ID hose about 2-1/2" long and put the plug ceramic in it and thread the plug down into place. Careful with the torque on alum heads. I used a bent handle - swivel head 3/8 drive with a 1" extention to tighten to 12 lb/lbs.

My 2001 Exploder (4L SOHC) is much more fussy than my 1996 4L pushrod engine. I can do the plugs from the top on the 96.

Good luck,
