I think my CV have gone bad...?

Hi there,
So i'm still trying to find out what this vibration/ grinding/road noise sound is that's appeared from the right front in the last few weeks. At first i thought it was the bearing/hub, but it's not and I checked the U-joints, but it really sounds like some sort of driveline sound - so my next step was the CV joints.

A part of the axle from the wheel to the CV joint is loose, i can shake it with my hand when the X is sitting. - what is this and would this make such a sound and vibrations?
Thanks,Matt

From what you described it's your HUB.

When your tire is off the ground, can you wiggle it from top/bottom? I replaced mine because it was making griding noises.

The splined axle goes through the hub and has a nut on the center of your wheel. Going towords your diffy, it has two CV joints on it. Check them to see if the boots are torn or have holes in them. Usually when the go, they explode and all the grease goes flying.

i had a good shop i know check the hubs, they said they were good, in that there was no movement, but could they still not cause the grinding sound?

There is actully play in the cv joints, but there's play on both sides, so i'm not sure if that's normal...

I have the car in at a shop now...so we'll see what they say....but i can't think of anything that wouldalmost amplify road noise....

I seem to be having the same exact Problem Also. I have 1 u joint bad , 2 bearings and both hubs. but i still drives in 2 wd good enough

Well, the jury (consisting of two mechanics) is back, it's my hub/bearing assembly. It's odd, because there was no play, only the sound, so in a day or two i'll be back in business with a supremely quiet riding truck...

I kinda went through the same, although the pass side has made some noise since I bought it. Just hasn't gotten worse. The driver side all of a sudden seemed to be grinding.

i know what you mean. And the damn things are so expensive...i'm sure once this is done, the other one will go...but such is life.
I actully got my X for a great deal, had high km on it, but everything else was mint, and the engine and tranny seem to be perfect, so i guess it only makes sense...and i'm defenitly happy with it...and it should ride smooth and quite now!

Im trying to get my hands on a lose hub assembly just to take it apart so i can see if there is a way to just replace the bearings, i only have one car so i cant do it on my X yet...in Sweden a hub assembly cost almost 400$!!
