Okay, I have searched this twice, andhaven't found how to clean it. Many people say they have cleaned it, but don't say how.

Many threads say to remove the black plastic cap, and pull the felt things out. I have a '96, and I don't have the felt things. How do I clean it?????

Man, what's with the onslaught of IAC problems lately.

Dunno, I couldn't get my black cap off so I doused it in cleaner, now it howls worse than ever once ina while. I'll use dynamite to get the cap off i have to.

There are two different types of IAC's.

I went to Auto Zone today, and they had both types. Some of the IAC have the place to remove the felt things, and apparently the black caps come off easy on these. On the other type, like on my '96 Sport, the black cap comes off quite hard, and there is nothing but a "pressure release valve" (as the guys at Auto Zone called it) under the cap. I just replaced the entire IAC for about $50, but I'm not sure if it did anything. I don't hear the howling anymore, but it isn't very hot today, so I won't know for a couple of days.

Low idle problem and alternative K&N cleaning solution

I had the same low idle at start up problem with my 98 X 5.0 AWD. When starting in cold and wet weather it would barely hold an idle. Been doing it awhile...afer warming up a bit it would stay running and was fine on the road, after reading this post I went out today and took the IAC off and cleaned throughly with carb and choke cleaner. I used a small toothbrush and Qtips as well for scrubbing and removing some thicker deposits. Let it dry, took the blow tip and the air pump to blow it out and bolted back on...started right up and idle went right up to the place it should be....nice...cant thank you all enough...what and easy fix...local Autozone had the part for $47 in stock just in case...ended up costing me a can of carb cleaner and 30 minutes. By the way mine had the metal none removeable cap on the top.

I cleaned my S&B air filter as well and ran out of cleaning fluid...this filter is very similar to K&N filter just higher end (or just cost more,) originally built for sprint cars I heard...any way I thought there has to be something else that could be used in place of the brand name "degreaser" so I googled it and found this on a off road forum...

"Later that night I was working on my CJ's brake lines and was cleaning up the area with Castrol Super Clean (Degreaser). I noticed that it had a very familiar smell but didnt think about it much further. A little later I went inside and was checking my email and I had another response regarding the alternative K&N filter cleaner solution. This person mentioned Castrol Super Cleaner. Bingo! It hit me right then, the smell of the Castrol cleaner is exactly the same as that of the K&N brand solution. I went outside and checked both bottles....sure enough. They contain the same ingredient.

So, if you are out of the K&N fluid or cant find any locally, the Castrol Super Clean should do the trick. I also hear that Home Depot sells a brand that is identical to the Castrol stuff but even less money... it's called Purple Cleaner and its made by Zep."

I just happened to have a small bottle of Castrol Super Clean and used it to clean it up...worked fine..I don't have a Home DePot here but am going to google that to figure out where they sell it...hope that can help someone in a pinch.
