We just bought our first Explorer. It's a 91 sport 4X4. It has some type of susp. llift but I don't know how much or what kind.

There is no writing (at least that you can see) to determine the brand. I'm more concerned with how much we have. Do I just measure the mounting bolts on one of the radius arm drop down brackets (say if they're 4" from center to center bolts) and that's my lift total. I've had a few Ranger 4x4's (83-85) and you could tell sometime by the size lift block under the leaf spring but not on this one. Springs are UNDER the axle. What's the reason they did this? Wasn't all Ranger and Bronco II's on top of the axle?

Will try to post a few pics of the susp. stuff later.

Thanks,

Gerald

rangers and b2s were spring over axle from the factory but explorers are all spring under axle. a better way to determine how much lift is on the truck might be to measure the length of the axle drop brackets as well as the radium arm drop brackets. hope this helps

measure your compressed coil height on flat ground.it should be about 10.5" stock.so if your front coils are 14.5 tall its a 4" lift, 16.5 is a 6" lift:thumbsup:

After checking, I'm pretty sure I have a 4" lift. I have no idea what kind it is as there is no writing or logos of any kind.

I have another question. Since the Explorer has spring under axle how do most lift kits get the rear level? Do they relocate the shackles? Add a leaf? How?

Thanks,

Gerald

The 2" lift kits provide an add-a-leaf and shackles. Some 4" kits provide re-arched rear springs. More than 4" they go with the brackets to convert to spring over axle. All the above kits provide new front springs.
