If it has a SAS then it's probably safe to say the gears are no longer stock.
The safe test is to jack up the truck and have a buddy spin the rear tire one complete rotation. Watch the driveshaft and count the rotations.

4 1/2 times is probably 4.56:1
3 3/4 times 3.73:1
It's probably 3.73, 4:10, 4:56, 4:88 or 5:13 if it's an 8.8

Good luck

...if it's an 8.8
x2 -- first make sure you have the right axle. People who do SAS sometimes swap out the rear axle axle too in order to match the front (width, bolt pattern, etc...).

EDIT -- scratch what I posted before.

it has 4:10 gears and a stock 8.8 rear axle my problem is because it has a locker already i dont know if it came with a factory track loc or not and i need to know because richmond gear has two diffrient power trax lockers one for trucks with track lock and one for rear ends without track lock so i need to find out which one i have so i can get one.

The tag on the drivers door will give you an axle code. Search this site and you'll find an axle codes page. IF that is the factory axle, it'll tell you.

If the differential's carrier looks like the pic below, with the giant "S" spring in the middle, then its a trac-lock:

but there is already a aftermarket locker in it i have no idea what the original looked like.

so if it spins 4 and a little more i will proably be 4:10?

thats your easiest bet to know the stock set up. and also the metal tag on the rear diff cover if no one has removed it.

Probably safe to say yes.

Also make sure both rear tires are spinning forward, if your locker is playing tricks on you then you might get a false reading.

With an open diff, with both wheels in the air if you spin one forward the other will spin backwards(and the driveshaft won't spin at all). With a locker they both will spin forward, with a broken locker...nobody knows.

Open up that diff and take a pic if you still can't figure it out.

does any one know if a 8.8 rear out of a 01 mach 1 will work in a explorer (will it fit under the truck, is it to narrow.) i have access to one for chep with alot of good parts in it.

It should be the same width, but Mustang rears were 28 spline where Explorer's were 31 spline. You dont want the weaker axles.

they are 31 spline its a friend of mine who built it as a spare for his drag car and then sold the car it has mosher 31 spline axles detroit locker and 3.73's i need 4.10's but either way this is a good start to getting my truck back on the road

It will work, i know a few Mustang guys locally that run Ex rears as a cheap upgrade, you'll just need to weld on the spring perches and shockmounts.

that i can do. im getting this thing for the cost of shipping if every thing works out right
