hey guys,
can someone please tell me how to get the air box out. It's amazing how such a small piece of **** item can be so difficult to get out. MAybe I'm going about it in the wrong way, I may need to read the instructions before I break it not the other way around. (joke)

Thank You,
Ricardo

p.s.
by the way I have a 1998 XLT SOHC box filter not the cone.

I don't know about the newer ones, but the older ones have two screws under the filter if I remember right. It has to be bolted down so just tug on it a little and see were it looks like it is hooked at.
Hope you find it.
Good luck...........................
Don't know if this was any help or not

the air filter box is really easy to take out. make sure its unbolted and everything. look into it and make sure everything is out. now grab it tight and pull hard. it might take a few tries but eventually ull get it out. i took mine out to replace it with a k+n filtercharger

There are no screws holding in the new ones. It takes a heckuva tug to pop it out though. I had to wedge a large flatblade screwdriver under mine to pop it out. You think you will break it, but it will pop out.

DO NOT JUST PULL IT OUT!!!!! thats how i broke mine, take the filter contraption off, there are two studs on the bottom of the box that are popped into rubber grommets, put a flat-head screwdriver down in the hole next to the stud on all three sides, popping it loose from the grommet, pull gently, this is easier for me to do now since i broke off one of the studs by just pulling on it....

depends what ur doin with the air box. if ur drilling it becarefull then. if ur just taring it out to put in a k+n or something then just rip the b@itch right out

Actually the reason I'm taking it out is because I took my car in to have the recall service done, you know the chain tensioner, air intake gasket, and also the one about the onboard diagnostic system, and they told me that another reason the check engine light had come on was beacuse there was a lean condition occuring, and that there was excessive carbon build up in the injectors and somewhere else, I forget.
I deduced that this was because of the drilled air box. I may be wrong but I want to return my air box to stock condition so that nothing like this happens again. I'm going to duct tape the crap out of it, making sure I've covered all the holes I made to it.
I would like your guy's input on what you think caused this carbon build up if you don't mind. LIke I said I attribute it to the drilled air box which in-turn caused a lean condition.

Thank You,

Try cleaning your Mass Airflow Sensor and using some fuel system cleaner in your gas. (Mopar is supposed to make the best you can get) Drilling holes in your airbox should not cause it to run lean. The computer should be able to adjust the air/fuel ratio to compensate for any extra air coming in from the drilled holes. It doesn't really get 'extra' air anyways as the engine only sucks in what air it needs, it just makes it easier for the engine to suck in that air. It sounds to me like your lean condition is coming from the computer not reading the right amount of air or the fuel system is dirty and not able to get enough fuel to the injectors.

BTW how many miles are on your X? How many miles since you drilled the airbox? Have you ever did either of the above things I suggested?
