how to remove ceiling mounted grab handles

I have just picked up a 1993 Eddie Bauer Explorer in excellent condition. However I need to replace the head liner which should be easy enough. However for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the ceiling mounted grab handles off. It look like they are mounted on steel studs instead of screws. any suggestions on how to get them off?
