I'm am about to drop the tranny to replace the slave cylinder.
Explorer is a 95 sport 4x4.
How do I pull off the shift lever? I pulled off the boot cover and can see the bottom of the lever.
It looks like a bolt holding it on, but it is just a bolt with no head. Really it is just a threaded rod.

What have you done to get it off?

it just a treaded rod
i did it about a year ago

forgot

also remember to put it in nuetral

YES!!! Make sure it is in neutral when you take it out. I didn't think of that, and wasn't aware of that, then when I tried putting mine back in, it wouldn't shift into any gear. Then my neighbor came over (he knows a lot about cars) and he just got a scredriver and popped something out of the way, and it was fine. On mine (a 91) it has 3 bolts holding it on. Or, the actual lever can just be removed (not the whole assembly) by taking out one bolt. Mine is stripped all to hell, but it still goes back in sort of fine. But the lever could just be taken out and not the whole shifter assembly. But I am not sure if yours is the same as mine is.

So how do you go about getting the rod out?
Did you double nut it? Or out a big pipe wrench on it or what?

Please explain how to take it out and get the lever off, I have to finish this ASAP. The lever is the last thing for me to take off before i drop the tranny.

Thanks

hey dude, the bolt that goes through is threaded at both sides, correct. Romove the nut on one side and install it on the opposite side. By tightening the nut it will pull the bolt(rod, wedge, whatever) out. Basically a built in puller for the bolt. Try it you will be amazed.
