I'm attempting to change the lower ball joint on a '99 - in trying to remove the knuckle I find that the shaft & CV joint is preventing me from lowering the knuckle far enough to get past the thread on the old ball joint.

Any suggestions on what needs to be done? This is my first 4wd vehicle so never dealt with this complication before.

Thanks.

I just did this on my 2000 Ranger 4X4, you have to remove the nut off the end of the axle shaft so you can swing the knuckle out of the way.

Remove the nut on the axle (and spray the splines with a penetrant).

Loosen the lower ball joint nut, but leave it on the threads by a few turns.

Remove the upper ball joint pinch pin/bolt and ball joint shaft from the knuckle.

I used a 2 jaw puller to put tension on the lower ball joint and then smacked the knuckle with a hammer a few times and it usually pops right out. Leaving the nut on loose prevents parts from flying a part.

With the nut off the axle and bj's disconnected the knuckle should just slide off the axle, but don't pull on the axle as you'll just end up pulling the CV joint apart, or the axle from the diff.

If you want to remove the knuckle completely, disconnect the tie rod end (same as the lower bj method) and unplug the ABS line/wire. Don't try to get the ABS sensor out of the knuckle as you'll probably break it.

Tip: If you find it necessary to hit the axle, or threaded end of anything to break it free, leave the nut on flush with the end of the threaded part and then hit it with the hammer. This way you wont ruin the threads.
