I've read the 4x4 troubleshooting sticky and plenty of others on this topic (my 4x4 not working) and I still have a question.

I've verified that my 4x4 module is working (the sticky was very helpful here!) and now I want to test the switch on the dash before I replace it, or rebuild the transfer case motor.

The switch looks like it has some sort of circuit board inside (maybe not) so I'm a little unsure how to go about testing it with my multimeter.

Does anyone have any input as to what pins I should check continuity between? There are 8 pins I believe.

Thanks in advance!!!

If you push the button and the module 'clicks' as if to try and shift the motor then you know the button is good. I would honestly start with the motor on the case. That is 99% the time where your problem is. The circut board is for the indicator lights and such in the switch assembly.

The book wants you to check pins at the module end of the harness. There should be a five wire connector. Looking at the harness connector with the retainer clip up, pin 1 is on the left.

1 White/Lt. blue, switch feed
2 Dk blue, 4x4 switch
3 Orange/Lt. blue, Low range switch
4 Brown/White, Low range light
5 Gray, 4x4 light

Put an ohm meter between 1-2 and 1-3. You should see low resistance(less than 50 ohms) while the switch is depressed. Checking the circut this way ensures that all the connectors are sound from the switch to the module. The module is located behind the drivers rear quarter trim panel. You can see it from the jack storage area. Make sure to disconnect your battery, you can fry your meter by tapping into a voltage supply wire while checking resisance.

Hope this helps.

No problem, glad to help:D

What to do if the button does not click. 4x4 light is always on, no 4x4.

When pushing the button you should hear a click from the module area in the back of the truck. If there is not any sound, check to make sure you are getting the inputs as stated above. If you are getting the input, and no sound at all, chances are your module is bad.

To test the module, remove the 5 and 8 wire connectors and turn the key on. There should be a test switch on the unit, activate it and observe the red indicator light that will flash if the module is good. If no flash or a steady red light; then its bad. No light at all, probably means it has lost its power supply.

Most of the time the problem is in the transfer case motor itself, more specifically the connector. It will corrode and stop working. Sometimes there will always be a faint glow in the indicator lights. I don't know why it happens, somewhere voltage is bleeding into the light circut, but many peolpe have it happen and the system works fine. My EB does it but my XL does not.:wtf:
