I've searched but can't find an answer.

What I've got a 1996 XLT that had a head unit with AM/FM, cassette and controller for a six disk cd changer in the console. There are audio controls on the back of the console for the rear seat. The connectors on the OEM unit were:
One that has eight spaces with two blanks. There was also a cover on the connector with descriptions for each connection. The wire colors and descriptions are as follows, 1 - Blue - "Mute (Optional)", 2 - Empty, 3 - Black / Green - "Radio Ground", 4 - Emtpy, 5 - Light Blue / Red - "Panel Illumination", 6 - Yellow / Black - "Radio Power Feed", 7 - Black - "Vehicle Chassis Ground", 8 - Green / Purple - "Memory Feed".

There is also a black sixteen pin connector.

I got a wiring guide from mobileinformationlabs.com and hooked up the aftermarket speaker leads based on it. I used the first connector to hook up the power, memory and illumination leads.

Plugged in the new unit and everything works great except there is NO SOUND AT ALL.

Ok, I guess takin out the OEM head unit must have disconnected the amplifier. There is a power feed from the AM unit for an amplifier. Where should it be hooked up at? I've seen some references to the blue lead in 1 above but the diagram says its for a "MUTE" function. Is the diagram wrong or do I have to go somewhere else to power up the factory amp? THANKS!!!

Same boat

I am having the same problem on a 97 ford ranger. Somehow I need to ID the wire that feeds the amp or if i can find the amp trace the wire back. If I find anything I will post it here.

Well after waiting a while I decided to use the smoke test. I replaced the cigarette lighter 15 amp fuse with a 7.5. Took a jumper wire and connected it to the Blue lead the Ford diagram identified as "Mute (Optional)". I then tried it out and I had sound. HAPPY DAYS!

thanks that worked here too!!! I tied it in with the red wire powering the radio so it will not run unless the car is running or in ACC. mode. I have installed one of these before and it was a snap. This was a pain in the butt!!!
