hey,
i was offoading on a local trail, when suddenly a loud humming noise started comming out from under the hood... i was like WTF so i popped the hood and the LOUD humming noise was comming from my airbox! it was vibrating real hard and the humming noise was real loud. when i pushed the gas to rev the engine the humming noise stoped, but came back at idle...it is now a couple hours later and after I let my X cool off in my driveway when i got home, i started it back up and there was no humming  . anyone know what that annoying noise was?!?!?!?!

IAC

Mine is doing it now, going to make a movie of it someday.

Messing with the electronics on my truck caused my IAC whine to start/stop. I need to get a new one, as mine isn't cleanable. I have seen quite a few people post that shortly after cleaning then the whine would come back.

quit sucking up humming birds while wheeling....

Mine does it only when engine is really warm (fully warmed up, outside temp is 95+). You can verify its the IAC by unplugging it while its making the noise. The engine will almost die, but mine will keep running. The noise stops as soon as you unplug it.

Some people have said you need to pull off the black vent cover and clean the little filter inside. I'm going to try this after I get my movie.

IAC valves are about $60.00 at NAPA. It takes five minutes to replace, including putting the tools away. It is the easiest repair you will ever make.

On my 2003 V8 I have a whistling in very hot weather while at 35-55 mph, not while idling. I decided to try and clean my IAC, but I'm not sure that I am looking at the right part. What I pulled off and cleaned (it didn't help by the way) is located towards the end of the throttle body, has one wire, two bolts, and an air intake tube that bypasses the throttle body. Is this what I am looking for?

The reason I ask is that I didn't see any filaments inside (which I believe I had read in another thread should be there) and I don't have a black vent cover on it. If anyone can direct me to the correct piece, I would greatly appreciate it.

By the way, whatever the piece is that I took off, it had lots of black crud in there that the air intake cleaner took right off. It almost looked like a mini piston in there.

I think the IAC vibrates causing the hum. The thing with the filaments you were looking for was MAF sensor.
