When I am driving whenever I press on the accelerator I get a humming sound that comes from the rear and when I let off the accelerator it stops. When it is coasting in gear it makes no noise. I've been told of a couple of possibilities like the ring and pinion are bad, there are some bearings in the rear axle that need to be replaced etc. The truck has 130,000 miles on it. Can anyone help?

id say you probably got a correct diagnosis with a couple bearings in the rear end... although if you have awd our trucks are quite whiny at times

"ford lover" >> OMG you're in DC!!! yeah without us actually hearing the noise, its kinda hard to pin down exactly what's making that hum. but yes, it could be the gears, bearings, etc... I'm out of town this weekend cauz im going snowboarding in VT (woooooooooo!!!) but i'd be more than happy to meet up with you maybe the weekend after. if it is the outer axle bearings, those arent too bad to replace (replace the seals too!). The innner bearing (in the differential) is tid bit harder tho... and i dont even want to talk about ring and pinion cauz that you need a shop that knows how to set them properly.

If your noise is only there when tipping in the throttle, chances are it's a gear noise... as bearing noises are normally there under most conditions.
