hello, hopefully somebody can help me. I have trouble code P0456 "small EVAP leak detected", and I can only put in about a half gallon of fuel at the gas station at a time, it takes about 10 minutes to fill up!...it's just like the vent tube is plugged, or there is an obstruction in the fuel filler hose. I've checked both the vent and filler tube as far as I can without dropping the tank and everything there seems OK. where does the trouble code play in to all this?

my usual attack at trouble shooting is to dive right in, but dropping the tank isn't something I'd like to do if I don't have to!

If I remember right the P0456 code showed up before I had problem filling the tank...I filled up easily at least once after the code showed up.

I've got a 2005 Explorer with the 4.0.

Can't fill gas tank

:us: Hello ...

My 04 Sport Trac has the same problem, most irritating .... it's taken me as long as 25-30 minutes to fill the tank. The only way to fill it is to proceed as slowly as you can, even then the gas "kicks back", then you have to reset the handle again and start the process again ... I have not found any information @ this issue .... HELP, HELP, HELP!!! PLEASE

The solution to my fuel fill problem:

After a bunch of very frustrating fuel stops, lots of i-net searching, replacing the fuel cap, clearing the error code (P0455) I finally visited my local FMC shop.

They did their magic ... did NOT have to pull the fuel tank ...

Part: Replaced 4L2Z9C915AA, Vapor Canister Purge Valve assembly SIEZED; $59.64

Labor: $300.00

Went to my local gas station ... it works!!!! (Kinda like ... it's alive, it's alive!)

FINALLY!

The cost is difficult on retired income, but it beats trying to fill the tank in the boon-docks of South-Eastern US.

Thanks folks for all your information, gave me good directions on what to try

thanks for the update...I might have to give it try with winter coming on!...don't want to be standing in the cold pumping gas for longer than I have to.

After the repair excitement settled down, I thought more @ how I would proceed, if the same thing happened again ...

Instead of paying the $300.00 + fees for the repair, it may have been a better idea to simply go get the part and put the #### thing in myself (it really is a simple fix) ...

When I did take my Sport Trac to Ford, in addition to the actual repair issue, they had developed a long laundry list of things they wanted to do for me ... at MEGA-BUCK prices. The additional "literature" attached to my invoice, if I didn't know better, would have scared the uninitiated to death. The list was 95% simple stuff ... clean battery terminals, clean fuel system, change fuel filter, etc, etc, etc. Their "estimate" over $1,200,00 ... OMG!!!

Even at almost 70 years old, I can do all of this stuff myself ... there is no need for me to let them get their long arm into my short pocket.

If others are looking at this repair issue it may be wise to proceed in this direction, you can always THROW MONEY at FMC to fix it ... some of us would rather "spoon feed" our money to the fine people at Ford ... They clearly have much more money than we do ...

Later folks
