Howdy,
I have a 1996 Ford Explorer that has some technical difficulties.I was driving on the Highway 65MPH, when all the sudden my ABS warning light came on.Following that changing lanes I noticed that I had no blinkers, not even my stereo was working.I headed to the nearest exit and at the light my truck lost all power. No windows, no hazzard lights nothing.

I then got out of the truck, flagged an officer over and he helped get my truck to a parking lot.The officer jumped my truck and I was off.A few blocks later luckly my drive way the truck dies again after a few beeps coming from under the glove box erea.

I just installed a Optima Battery, new Terminals, all fuses replaced, still all she does is click.I have dim head lights and interior lights untill they die, and I'm stumped, any help out their:exp:

I would check the resistance in your battery cables to start off using a multimeter.. The closer to 0 ohms the better. If you can get the truck started, put a digital multimeter on the battery and have someone raise the rpms to about 2000 RPMS and see if it increases the voltage. I suspect off the top of my head that your cables have a really high resistance reading causing minimal voltage to be flowing thru them or possibly some other sort of electrical problem like a faulty battery or bad alternator but you did state you got a new battery with new connectors but your using the old cables.

Thanks

Yes I will giver a try in the mornin and get back to you,Thanks for the info man I appreciate it.

it sounds like a altenator to me....

It does sound like the alternator get truck running and check the charging system.

Indeed it was my alternator..............I took my Optima battery to Shuck's today everything checked out.I was told it is still in perfect shape. I ordered a 135amp 5 1/4in Altenator, took the one I had in her out and putting the new one in tommarow.

I'll get back to yall soon...........Thanks for the good advice.

Prior to putting in the new Alternator I was asked to check my existing one to save some money.I did and was told it was in perfect condition, So I put it back in she fired right up.

Drove 4 Miles the next day and noticed the battery charge went from half way full to below the low line within 5 miles of driving it.I took it to Napa to get a Diagnostic and was told they didnt do that for free.

I then told them I would get it done for free @ Shucks or Knecks thanked them anyways and hopped in the truck,She just clicked.I then asked if Napa would charge my battery he came out and said my battery had a zero core charge reading and I need to replace my battery.

He charged my truck with one of those portable jumpers, I made it another two blocks, to my drive way again luckily safe at home then she died again.Does anyone have any more ideas or test that I could run on the truck?

Did you ever check the cables? Have you had the truck since it was new?

Also check the voltage with it running. Even with a good alternator it may not be charging.

Thanks I was having a hard time getting to my thread.

I have checked all the cables and terminals and everything looks tip top.I also checked all the fuses.

I will buy a volt Meter and check it out thank's yall.

Similar issue for me, new battery, new terminals but old cable. Looks like the ground cable is corroded within. Unfortunately the cable is tied in with a dozen others in a loom. Is it ok to bypass the loom with a new ground cable and wrap it to the loom?

I re grounded all the wires and she has been running better than ever..........thanks for all the help yall take care.
