I recently purchased a 95 x from an elderly gentleman that needed new shacles and the rear brakes needed to be bled from a line he replaced, heres where it gets interesting. For the last week and a half I have been trying to bleed the rear brakes to no avail. I tried regular bleeding techniques, vaccumm pump, and nothing. Then in the mean time I replaced the master cylinder, still nothing. I had a mechanic look at it at my house and he diagnosed it as a bad abs pump. Today I bought a used pump from a partout truck for 25 bucks, still nothing. I then went back to the start, checked the master cylinder, nothing from the master to the rear line leading from the master to the abs. I then took the new master out, went back to advance auto and exchanged it for another one, got home assembled it,bled it and put it back in.Now I'm hoping this is the problem, but as I'm tightning the bolts to the booster pump I look inside the brake reservoir to see what looks like a screen right in the fill spout. It wasnt a screen, I assume the last owner while adding fluid let the little cardboard circle on the cap fall in the reservoir and was plugging the outlet for the fluid. I then bled all the brakes with no problems. Sure I'm out about 100 bucks in parts and my brain hurts trying to find this problem but I felt so stupid in front of my wife who was helping me. Sorry for the long story but I had to tell someone.

:D I would have kept that story to myself...

True, but i figured others needed a good laugh. the nice thing is the X only cost me 650 bucks.

Don't feel bad. Everyone has their "duh" moments.

The good thing is, I didn't listen to my wife and bring it to a real mechanic as she calls them. It was something even a pro wouldnt have caught, I did by accident only.

Me too

Do not feel bad...pretty funny since it happened to you, but I have been there more times than I want to admit...ha ha :roll::roll:

Don't worry... first time I used my spare tire I forgot to put the lugnuts on... but in my defense the girl that was with me was holding them for me and got back in the Explorer... was just in to much a hurry lol. Thank god I was in a neighborhood...

We all have our moments. But now you know to check EVERYTHING before you buy parts.

amen to that.

You're not the first.... a little more than a decade ago, I sold parts at a local chain. I saw the exact same thing happen to a guy.... The diaphragm from the old Ford reservoir stuck to the top of the fill cap and he said the reservoir was full.... When he brought the whole assembly in, the problem became self-evident pretty quick... :)

At least you didn't embarass yourself publically.

We had a guy come into our dealership (Case Construction Equipment) and proceed to tell us very matter-of-factly that he didn't need our services, that he has worked on his "own damn equipment" for 40 years, and that he's forgotten more than we'll ever know about engines.

He lambasted us for "not carrying parts for the machines we sell, and that we're a s*** dealer who is only interested in getting customers into our shop so we can rape their wallets."

So our parts guy proceeded to tell him that he would be happy to reimburse him every last penny of his money for any parts he bought- if he could in fact find a shop in town that stocked spark plugs and wires for a 1996 Case 580 Super L Backhoe running a Cummins Turbo Diesel engine.

Think about that for a second... I don't know anyone that carries spark plugs and wires for a diesel engine, do you? 40 year mechanic? Riiiiiight...

No, he never came back. :D
