this is exactly how i have it in the tractor forum that i joined today. they are beating around the bush and not reading it closely. it may be my fault but here it is: my spelling and punctuation is off because this was all done from my cell phone today while at work trying not to get caught. lol.

what to do...
I have recently gotten ahold of a 39 Ford 9n. It was converted to 12 volts and i have al the 6 volt components. When i got it, it refused to fire. I thought something was all screwed up so i.pulled out all the wireing and went inside and ordered a new 6 volt coil and an electronic ignition or breakerless point, what evver you want to call it. It said the electronics are for positive ground 6 volts. I really would like to go back with 12 volts but don't want to fry the new ignition system by doing a negative ground 12 volt. What I want to know is would it hirt this new ignition attempt on a negative ground 12 volt sytem, what would you d and why diagrams welcome. Only thing I don't have is a 6 volt battery. Thanks for any and all replies

Do you have a schematic diagram of the 6 volt system or the new 12 volt system?

If it is rated for 6v positive ground you will smoke it if you hook it up to 12v negative ground. If nothing else you just doubled the voltage. That would be similar to sending 240v AC through a standard 120v AC lightbulb or trying to cram 10 lbs of **** into a 5lb sack. Even though the latter has been attempted many times.

thanks for the replies. the tractor forum answered back finally.and they were able to find the correct 12 volt stuff. and it all came in a few days later.

in case your interested. the tractor ignition system is put together and is firing. when i tested it i didn't see a spark but it was shocking me instead. lol. so i would say it works now. just have to build the fuel system and find the radiator bolts and see if it will fire up. then on to the hydrolics.

funny you should mention the 240v thing. i just bought a house and someone was running ceiling fans with 220 and found live 220 lines in the wall going to nothing. there is more to this story but ill spare you.. the whole house had to be rewire and the electrician said he was surprised the house never burned down.
