'99 XLT AWD 5.0
Hi everyone. I finally bought a '99 Explorer AWD 5.0 this last Thursday. Its a white XLT with 67000 miles and judging from the low miles, all the equipment that had obviously been installed around the dash, The two 7/8" holes in the roof (That look right down onto the insullation for the headliner. We didn't see them until the next day after taking it home. I consider it an undeniable omen that this Ex is destined to have a safari rack and lights on the roof. The holes are already there! Yes they are properly plugged and sealed now) and the flares in the rear storage marked California fire department, Were thinking it was a fire chiefs response car. Anyway. I throughly love my "new" Explorer, but now that I have a few nubbie questions. First off, I read that it had a chain transfer case but I wasn't prepared for what I saw. The thing is only about three inches or so from the front to the back! I cant imagine this having a very heavy chain inside it. Has anyone heard of them going out from too much power from the 5.0? ( I was impressed by the power by the way) Is there an upgrade that would be compatible with the AWD system? On an un-related note. The dipstick is twisted all the way down from the handle to the tip. Is this normal? Thanks again to everyone who helped me narrow down what I was looking for then I was shopping for an Explorer. This forum and its helpful, positive atmosphere definitely helped me make my choices. The knowledge-base here is great and I have refered a few people here. Thanks Again.
Ray

The transfer case is so short because the case is not selectable. 2wd and 4lo take up a lot of room. :D Also, the dipstick is normal. Good luck with the new Explorer!
