91' Explorer
Hello, I just got a 91' explorere given to me two weeks ago. The body is in good shape but the enterior needs a little work and running seems to be good but the hissing noise of the cracked vacume line seal on the brake booster.....does anyone know if I can take that seal out and get a new one or would I have to replace the whole brake booster?????
Oh another question I got a 94' ford ranger given to me last fall time and the body is good excepet where where some kid backed into the side of my bed.....but anyways I taught my girlfriend how to drive stick in it and she knocked out the clutch.....well I put a new clutch in it and drove it for about a mounth and now it willn't go in gear.......so I checked the fluid and it was empty and I put more in and beed it number of times and it still wouldn't go in.....well I had an extra ****ch master cylinder so I put it on and all new lines and still can't get it to go in gear.......but I don't lose fluid anymore......could it be possible I don't got the line going in to the slave cylinder in far enough or is there an o ring in there that could be out????? Thanks Jesse Huffman

Hissing: I had the same problem and asked the same question. No response. just this Friday I pulled the plastic piece out of the Booster. I put some Silcone rubber on it and plugged it back in. I couldn't find a new Grommet that would work.

Clutch. Bleeding, Are you sure you got all the air out? NOt with the Explorer but with other cars I had to unbolt the slave and hang it with the Bleeder screw facing up and let the thing Gravity bleed. Pumping the pedal wasn't enough.

Thanks for your advise...........I'm not sure if I got all the air out......see my slave cylinder is in side the bell housing.....but I have left the bleeder open over night and and it didn't change anything.

Thanks for your advice Tony!

I too had the same problem with the brake booster grommet. I used all kinds of goops that would be fine for a couple weeks then would crack. I finally smeared it all up with red RTV. It looks like crap but it doesn't hiss anymore!

bleeding the clutch i had to pull the master cylinder and bleed it out of the X and the reinstall it

Cost to repair and the cost of aggravation has a limit.....IMHO.

As for the brake booster……if the brake booster is leaking….don‘t repair it w/ silicone………think, SAFETY. You loose your brakes on a turn……..what’s next?

As for the Clutch slave………….check it again and check the mechanical functioning of it……….is it really doing what it is suppose to? Or, is it something else?

Aloha, Mark

Thank you all for your advice..........Ma96782 how would I check the mechanical function of the clatch slave with out un doing the bell housing?

As I rememeber for my toyota:

There are two master cyl (like cyls) to deal with.........the one on the firewall and the one on the bell housing.

So........you push down on the clutch pedal w/ your foot.......the one on the firewall pushes fluid to the slave on the bell housing......which in turn pushes via leverage, the throwout bushing, pressing onto the diagraphram fingers. So, sometimes the cyls aren't doing their jobs......look. And sometimes there is an adjustment to be made......so, check that too.

If everything is good (so far) then maybe the throwout bearing isn't doing it's job......well, on some applications there maybe an inspection hole to see. In the end, you may/might just have to just take it all apart and start again.

Aloha, Mark

Carquest carries a gromment kit. One of those in the kit will work for your booster.

Yup, I had the same problem with my old '92. Double Discount and Napa had that rubber seal thing.
