I've got an '02 EB loaded 4.6L Explorer bought new for $34K and never abused. I fortunately bought a 100K extended warranty through the dealer. It's had a huge amount of problems that fortunately were covered under the extended warranty. Since it's expired more major problems have cropped up like tranny issues and 4WD issues involving the transfer case clutches, electrical issues involving the bells and whistles like auto headlamps, power seats, power door locks, key fob not working & etc. It's now sitting in my driveway with cracked heads, bad head gaskets and has always sounded like a diesel at idle and anytime power is applied, uses a quart of oil every 500 miles and the A/C has a leak that can't be found. In other words it's toast at 184K with about $6K worth of work needed. If everything worked properly after the neccessary repairs, it's worth about $2K at best on a trade. Irregardless of what brand I buy in the future, I'll never own another 4WD vehicle due to the problems experienced with this vehicle and the fact that we rarely ever get weather that would require it. 4WD only means more and expensive problems if you keep it long enough. Regarding the statistics mentioned by waskley, I've talked to several owners of this vehicle in my area and it appears I've gotten off lightly compared to some that had huge problems before 50K like trannys, rear ends, transfer case clutches, rear wheel bearings, a/c compressors, computers, fuel injection issues & etc.
I've also got a 2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited 3.4L, with all the bells and whistles and at 201K, it runs perfectly, doesn't ever require oil between changes, everything works as new and is always dependable and it has a superior 4WD system. It's off-road ready from the factory without modifications and I don't mean just pasture fields. Many of these have already went over 300K before engine or tranny rebuilds and these weren't soccer moms. It's currently worth between $6K-$8K or more on a trade at any dealership in this area and some dealers have offered to buy it outright due to the model's rock-solid reputation. The only thing it's required outside of normal maintenance such as the timing belt replacement has been the starter solenoid contacts being replaced. Not the starter, just the starter solenoid contacts for $60 installed. Tell me which brand I'll be more prone to purchase in the future.
