I need ideas of what this could be

i have a 95 ford ranger XLT and i just changed the water pump yesterday, i drove it and it drove fine. Now today i try to go to a friend's house and it doesnt go into reverse and it makes a loud chatter coming from the transfer case, now when u switch it from park to any other gear it also doesnt want to go back into park like the input shaft is still spinning and not allowing the parking pawl to lock in place. it does go into drive but it takes a while and when u put it into drive it chatters for a while then locks itself into gear and the chatter goes away......any ideas i checked the wires best i could......ITS F'in RAINING OUTSIDE TODAY TO TOP IT OFF AND I HAVE TO WORK TOM. I really need help!!

Is it automatic? could be your linkage has got out of whack for some reason. I would check that. Usually there is a way to adjust for any slack at your tranny and t-case. Not too familiar with your ride though.

Can you put it in 4 and notice the same engagement issue? Does the engine "load up" in manual 1 & 2 (If an automatic) or is there a delay in engagement there too?
