I need instruction to change pads on 4x4 explorer 93. Can anyone help?:salute: not sure how to use site?

They moved to a new server and the search index has not been fully built, so if you tried searching, that is probably why it didn't return (many) results.

At the high level, here are the steps as I remember them. If you are changing just the pads, not taking off the rotors, this is SO easy yer gonna love it. My ex is also 1993, by the way.

1. Jack the truck up, remove the wheel. While you have the wheel off, everyone here recommends that you take the lockout hub and soak it in transmission fluid. I got into the habit of doing that, too.

2. The caliper is held by two pins. Use a punch and a hammer to drive the pins out (away from you). Hit it gently, it does not need much force to come out.

3. Remove the caliper, replace the pads. If your old pads were really worn, the new pads are thicker and the caliper won't fit around the rotor. In this case, use a c-clamp to push the pistons in some.

4. If the pins look like they are in ok shape, you can reuse them. Dont forget to put some brake grease or anti-seize on them. Place the caliper on the rotor, line up the grooves in the caliper with the grooves in the knuckle and drive them pins in.

5. If you did not disconnect the brake lines (shouldn't need to), you don't have to bleed the brakes. Unless you suspect that you got air in there, and then you need to bleed them ;)

6. Put the wheel on.

Just what i was looking for. my front brake pads need replaced, and I'm pretty sure the rotors are ok. I had the brakes checked visually by a local tire shop, and they said my pads are about gone....but that everything else looks good. Thanks for the write-up. I bought my '94 and its already got Warn manual hubs, so I'll just soak that sucker in ATF and be done :) Hopefully no surprises await me!

There are fairly cheap hardware kits out there, I bought one just in case one of the pins gets weird on me. The pins are two halves bonded together with rubber. As you start knocking the pin, you will probably see one side getting ahead of the other, so do it evenly. It's obvious once you have a pin in your hand, just a little bit of mystery how it works. Really one of the easier designs I have seen... hammer, screwdriver and a c-clamp pretty much do the job.
