Hello guys and gals if there are any more of us out here! I need some help with a tire question. I have a 1998 Explorer and was wondering if I can put a 31" by 10.5 by 15 tire size on it with stock height? My friend Dave has 31's on his stock height but its a 1995 model. Does anyone else out here have a 1998 too?

Heather =)

I am new to this site today and if I did this wrong or shouldnt of made a new topic please let me know and I can change my ways. Thanks again for the help! If anyone wants to see me and my Explorer I will have some pics soon!

My wife's 98 XLT SOHC has 235x75r15's on factory 15x7 cast aluminum (ugly) rims right now, so I'm assuming that all/most 98's came with at least 15x7 rims (check your driver's door sticker).

At any rate, 31x10.5's OR 265x75r15's will fit with at most very minor rubbing. I didn't know 95's would run 31's stock.

I'm waiting to put 31's on to see if the new Goodyears are worth it - they're the only tires I've heard of that have sidewall protection equivalent to BFG's.

Regards,
Brian

Hi Heather,
Welcome to the Best Explorer site on the Internet.I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. There are a lot of really good people here that are very knowledgeable and helpful too. I have a 97 XLT 4X4 4dr with 31X10.5 R15 BFG A/T's and don't have any problems at all, even at full compression and full turn. You can see it here on the home page under "Hollister Hills Run". I don't think there should be any differance between the 97 and 98. You could always ask the tire dealer to put them on and check them out at the store. That's what I did. most good tire stores will do this for you. Hope this helps Dead Link Removed

Thanks guys!

I am so glad that I FINALLY found a cool place on the web to chat about Explorer's. Maybe one day I can go on one of your Exploration Runs with you all?

Check out the San Diego Los Coyotes Indian Reservation Run/camping in August if you're interested in a run in Southern CA. There will be stock vehicles, mildly lifted vehicles, and wildly lifted vehicles. The trails according to Paul B. range from mild to wild to suit your taste.

Hey Brian,
The tires that I have on my 97XLT are the same tires that I had on my 95. They fit quite well on the 95. My 97 came with Goodyear Wrangler HT's, but they are more like a hiway tire, so I told the dealer I would take the 97 if he swapped the tires from my 95 to the 97. I like a more aggressive tread even though I commute 160 miles a day. The BFG A/T's are not that noisey, and they sure look good. Dead Link Removed
Hey I'm heading out to Sequoia Sat AM, hope I can find a spot. If you go by Big Meadows drop by and say hi, and thanks for the info. I will definately check out acouple of those spots you mentioned. Unit 3 is the last camp site before you get to the concrete bridge. Dead Link Removed
