cybergasm it's the same the world over. Most of Europe treat turckers with respect though because they realise that everything they have and use is at somepoint transported by truck.
But in general in the UK we are treated like trash! for some reason the general public have so much hate for us. Truck stops are now gone, £20 to park in service stations on the motorways, constant hassle from the general public and their lack of understanding of the size and dangers of driving such heavy machines. I know it's the same in most countries and from drivers i speak to they all think it would be a great idea if part of the driving test for that country that the students should spend a day in a HGV.
The good thing about driving trucks in the UK though is it's £ph and not £pm so every traffic problem means £££££'s. But that all goes out of the window when you want to get home because you have not been in your own bed for a week, two weeks or two months.

ive always fancied a driving job and now ive got some spare cash id like to have ago ,how much should i expect to part with? i do drive 15tonnes at the airport for 12 years but being private land i didnt need a class licence so not a novice but id assume theres a fair bit to learn! thanks in advance

At the moment i would hold sticks as there are not a lot of jobs out there right now with the slow down.
On average my take home was between £500-£600 per week depending on hours and time away from home. In my time as a driver i have driven in all of Europe except Norway. North Africa and as far east as Turkey. It is a ladder game once you pass your test and it is very hard to find work within the first 2 years of passing your test as most employers insurance will not accept you.
Expect 15-16hr days 6 days a week i know work in driver recruitment i got out of the game last year. God i don't know what to do with myself now that i am doing 9-5.
If you need to know anything helps hints tips or whatever then just ask..

thanks for the advice,seems ill have to work harder than i do now! the hours are too long seeing i have two little ones so thanks for the insight ill probaly stick where i am then and spend the money on the explorer cheers,richard

Just a little insight is that you are legaly can work 15 hr days/shifts, you can drive for 9/10hrs a day, 6 shifts per week.
Now your Transport Manager will use this to their limit regardless of what you want to do! In the instances where you work abroad like i did i.e. traveling through Europe you your self use these limits to their max just to get home for the weekend (24hrs off)
Don't get me wrong its a great job and like i have said before you get to see the world the real world, i have been on the beach's in south Spain for the weekend for free while everyone else as paid to get there. Seen the sights and the **** holes.
My son is now 4, i have been married twice and i am only 29 so take from that what you whant. But all in all it's not a good job for peopl with families. Working in the UK only is ok, but again you will be away from home all week, or if you decide to do day driving you will only see you bed for like 6hrs a night.
Need i not mention the driving itself. Hard hard work, most people going from let s say manchester to london will stop on the way down for a service station, well no chance. your drive all the way then have a break because the law says so. Time time time and all that, you must rush to your next delivery and or collection. 90% of the drivers on the road have no idea of driving large trucks the limit to what you can see and stopping stuff like that.
Having said that though if my current job fell on its arse then i would be driving again without a shadow of a doubt!
