Ok I know i have made few posts like this one but this is really getting to me now cause even my dealership dont know what’s wrong :'(

Im driving along at about 60mph and i take my foot off the accelerator and a sound comes up from the transmission that sounds like an electric saw ... or someone is drilling.... its really loud. then when i put my foot back on the accelerator again it stops for a while till the next time i take my foot off...

I dont know much about the workings of the transmission but do you think it could be the torque converter? or do you think its a bigger problem than that...

also if i do need a new tranny does anyone know where or who i could get a used one from :-)

thanks very much

there it is... its not very old and i dont want it to die just yet :'(

Based on what is happening when the tranny makes the noise, I would likely go torque converter. When you take your foot off the gas, the TC unlocks (someone correct me if I have it backwards) and you'll see your RPM's drop. When you give it gas again, the TC locks, your RPM's will rise, then drop a little. If it's making the noise at these times, 99% its the TC. So based on your discription, it sounds like something is not right when the TC is unlocking. I assume you have check the fluid level/condition and have serviced it regularly......

Tom,
yeah the oil in the box looks good and its just had a flush.
Ok so it sounds like the tc.... do you know about how much this would cost?

thanks for your help tom..

Didn't I ask you in another thread if you have 4x4 or not (maybe I'm thinking of someone else)? Anyway, if you do have 4x4, then my bet would be on your transfer case shift solenoid. I'm betting the worm gear is misaligned and getting stuck between high and low gear. When it happens you will get a very loud ratcheting sound while giving it gas. I pulled my solenoid out once to clean the speed sensor behind it. When I put it back together, I didn't get the worm gear in the proper home position. The next time I went 4-wheeling, I drove about 15-20 miles in Low. When I got back to the dirt road, I put it back into Auto. Once my speed got up to about 30-40 MPH I had a horendous ratcheting noise whenever I would step on the gas. If I let off the gas to coast, the noise got a lot quieter. I ended up coasting off the road and switching between Low and High a couple of times and shut off my Explorer and restarted it. It seemed to do the trick since it hasn't acted up now in the last three years.

If yours is 4x4, then try switching between Low and High (while transmission is in N). Be sure you feel it switch into Low and High. If that doesn't do it, it might be worth your while to have your dealer pull the solenoid out and check to be sure it is operating correctly.

I just got my car back from the ford dealership. They took it on a drive to see what the problem was.
They heard it clearly coming from the tranny but did not know what it was at that point.

They then took it back to the workshop and lifted it up on a ramp and had a look to see if they could replicate it. It appears if the car is not under any load the problem is not there.

They say that have no idea what it could be as they have never had an transmission problem on an explorer ever… so my onw ford dealership sent me away with an offer to put a new tranny in it.... because they did not know what the problem was... and we all know how much that will be.

They say it’s not drivable as anything could happen at any time …I.E a lockup or whatever.

I guess i will be looking for a tranny but not a new one... does anyone have one for sale? I have a 4x4 explorer SHOC as you can see in the photo above.

thanks !

What pumpkin patch did you find these guys in?

"They say that have no idea what it could be as they have never had an transmission problem on an explorer ever…" Think you might find someone else with experience, even in Kansas.

I think you better find another dealer for service. This one sounds like they're just pulling your leg and trying to get $ for a new tranny out of you...

I wish i could .... however in the UK they have no idea about the explorer :'(

I guess i could get a tranny from the US and ship it?

If you're in England, then you may want to try and find out from some of the other UK members here where there is a good dealer. May want to change your profile so we know where you are now....

Thank you for the input you are a gentleman and a scholar sir.

try a transmission shop. all transmissions work about the same, they should be able to figure it out, even igf they have no experience with the explorer.

The Ford Dealer has no expereince with the Explorer, I find that hard to comprehend. Where do all the other UK members go.

Try to start another thread with UK in the title.
