I think my right side rear axle shaft is bad, please help??

Greetings:

My rear diff seems to be doing ok, except for a bearing whining, howling noise that I continue to get. I have since replace my front diff, my half shafts in the front are ok, I replace my front brake pads, rotors, hub bearing assemblies, rear brake pads etc. I even disconnected my front shaft, because the shaft cv joint connect was bad. My transfer case seems ok, no play or noises within either end. The sound only comes about during acceleration, and all but diminishes on the hwy, except for a small hint, that it is there (faint sound after 60 mph or so). But once I accelerate it crop up each and everytime. While I was doing my rear brake pads yesterday, I noticed that the rear rotor on the left side had a significant amount of play. I was able to pull it outwards about 1/2 inch or more! The driver's rear side didn't really budge. Also the left side had some pivot play up and downwards as well. How much of a PITA is it to replace that shaft on that side. I don't think my entire rear diff is toast. I have not developed any leaks or anything. Its just that dreaded whining, howling sound:rolleyes:! Thank you in advance!!!!:salute: 1997 explorer XLT AWD 5.0 V8 4 DR with 123,000 original miles. I love the truck, However, I would like to resolved the problem.
 






Replacing the axle shafts is not difficult. I did mine a couple months ago. EricAutoPart had a smokin' deal going on here for Yukon Gear shafts for $75 each, and if you buy the shafts, bearings and seals are $10/side.

The bigger challenge will be dealing with the parking brakes. That job never goes well...

Thanks gijoecam! I know, I absolutely dread those parking brakes. So if it gets any worse, might I expect any gear oil leaks? The play in that shaft is a little too much. Thanks again!:salute:
