I have a '96 explorer and it drives nicely for the most part except for the fact that when I go over bumps everyone in the car gets thrown around. I think my shocks are pretty much done. I took a look at them and i actually saw rust on the bottom have of them:( So would replacing them fix the problem with going over bumps? I also have no idea what I would be getting if I were to have them replaced. I just basically need help in deciding whether it'd be worth getting new shocks so that my car might drive more comfortably.

You could have other suspension problems, especially being a 96, but if the shocks are stock they are garbage anyway. A lot of people here go with monroe reflex shocks for street use and report good things, and they aren't too expensive. Also, make sure your sway bar endlinks and bushings are in good shape and nice and tight. Balljoint problems are also common so you may want to have a look at them too.

quick way to tell if shocks are bad is to push up and down on the front/rear bumper until you get a good bounce going, then stop! and if your shocks are bad the truck will keep bouncing up and down... if you have good shocks it should bounce once more/maybe twice, and settle
