97 sport 4x4
I noticed today out in the snow that my 4x4 is not actuating the front tires. its a 97 sport with control trac. the unit will lock into low range but will not spin the front drive shaft. when i purchased this truck i changed the tcase oil and the fluid that was in there looked like cofee and smelled like burnt clutch material. i filled with new atf and the 4x4 worked for quite some time. but now i can raise the rear put the truck in drive and the truck will not move i dont even get the 4x4 tire skip when doing a u turn. how common is it for these clutch packs to smoke, i see there is an magnet operation so aleaking hydraulic seal is not the cause of slippage. do these magnets have a tendancy to fail? i have no problem tearing down the case in the garage but i want to get all the needed parts before it comes out so i can repair it in a few hours. also the warning lights do not flash however they do come on solid like normal when placed in the respective mode just no front wheel movement. for this reason i feel the wires and mode actuator/speed sensors are all working properly as i would for sure get a code for these parts.

my guess is a seal kit, adapter gasket and case half gasket along with a new set of frictions and steels will correct this issue.

anyone have any ideas of what else it could be or am i on the right track.

The first things to check involve electronics... Soecifically, you'll want to check for power at the brown wire where it enters the transfer case. With the key on and engine idling, there should be some level of power at the t-case. If there isn't, then we need to start troubleshooting back up the line. If there is, then yes, the transfer case clutch coil in the t-case likely took a dump.

That's the easiest place to start. Check it out and let us know what you find. :)
