Drove a 400 mile trip this weekend, 200 miles each way. The truck has been fine, no problems, clutch is good. It was fine driving to the loaction, but driving back at about 100 miles I noticed a loud high pitched wine/grinding type sound in 1, 2, 3, & 5th gears. It does not do it in 4th, or R, & stops when I put in in N. It happends when I press the gas, or downshift. The X still shifts fine, I get no slipage, & my rpm's are normal. The truck only has 66K miles. Besides the 5 speed tranny, any other ideas as to what it could be. It does sound like it's coming from the passanger side somewhere.

have you owned or known the owner of the truck since it was new?
if not...
66,000 on a 94 sounds quite a bit low and due to the highest miles it can show being 99,999 then you might be intrested to find out the real miles on it...... it maybe 166k, i'm not saying it is...but it might be worth checking out...carfax.com

I'm sure it is that low. I have a 6 digit one, it does keep track after 100,000 miles. It has a clear title, & only owned by 1 person before me in the same state. I bought it with 52K miles last year.

Can anyone help??

Did you check the fluid level?? Make sure the rubber plugs on the top of the tranny didn't fall off and you haven't been losing fluid.......

Yeah the fluid was good, & it wasn't leaking. The shop called me & said the tranny is toast. I don't see how since it only has 66K real miles. It was fine 1 minute & the next it's gone. I guess it's great Ford engneering. I was expecting it, but not this soon. Looks like it will have to sit for a few months untill I can pay to have it done. It's $1500 with a new clutch. I'm thinking of getting a tranny from a junk yard & then selling it. The body, & interior is in great shape, I could get about $4K for it easily. But for now It's a dead weight in my driveway.

toast

Toast, huh? It'd be interesting to find out why.

I'd get a second or third opinion before shelling out the $$$ for a new tranny or to rebuild the one thats in it.

I've had a few funny whining and grinding sounds from my X too, but it's usually been quirks that happen once in a while. You might wanna check and change all the fluids like the tranny, transfer case (if you have 4WD), and the front & rear axles. The universal joints on the driveshafts can make noise too if they're too worn or need lube. Check everything out - if the truck runs and shifts fine, its likely a minor problem, and a ripoff shop will fix it and then charge you the $1500, telling you they fixed your tranny!

If you do find it is in fact toast, it might be worth your while to replace it yourself. You can probably do it for half the cost of a shop doing it, providing you have the ability and the tools. Check the For Sale, Trade, and Wanted forum as well- you might get a recently rebuilt tranny for cheaper than you imagine!
