I wasn't tire noise

My 2005 Explorer XLT with AdvanceTrax RSC vin 1FMZU73K85UB76081 had what i thought was a tire noise. I purchased 4 Michelin LTX M/S 2 and the noise still exist. I thought it my be, that the 4x4 had not been engaged in a while, so i engaged and drove for several miles, note; i did notice when making sharp turns with 4x4 engaged, the front would hop and make a popping noise. Are there bearing in the that could be wearing in the front and read differentials? Appreciate any trouble shooting post.

All wheel hubs are highly prone to failure (LR was making quite a hum on mine) and also differential bearings very common for them to sing.

When in 4x4 on dry pavement there is much greater bind up in your drive-train. That is how you break axles, differentials, transfer cases, and transmissions.. Something has to give. Eventually.

While investigating for defective hub, what methods did you use? Were you able to feel any distortion in the LR hub that validated it was the bad one? Was there another test u performed?

I had not had the truck long, but had heard of differential whine issues in these rigs, so I was proceeding with my absolute worst diagnostic habit: TUNNEL VISION. Too focused on one thing, losing awareness of causes. Not until I took a drive on US 33 over Shenandoah Mountain into WV. Making the turns on that twisty section it became clear most of the hum was from the hub bearing. I pulled the knuckle out and turning it by hand it was rough as hell with substantial resistance. Before disassembly there was no play when yarding on the tire...it was very tight actually. I have one for the other side just haven't pulled it out yet because the guy with the press is still pissed at me for bringing the first one in! LOL

As for the signature diff whine, I have something for that: UNDERCOATING. I undercoated my 2G and you can't even hear the transfer case shift.

Well, the Lord took me to the LF where I found the shot!! bearing. I replaced both LF and RF hub assemblies with the sensor line attached but now my ABS light is on, do I need to take to a garage and have reset? Could something be wrong with the parts? I used NAPA parts.

First get the codes read...should show a fault either LF or RF. Then you know where to look. I have certainly heard of problems with replacement hubs, matter of fact I used China specials on my '97 and inside of a year I get intermittent fault for LF...

Thanks, I also learned that u have to drive the vehicle after replacing the hubs to extinguish the ABS light. So I took it for a spin and the light went out and the brakes work fine. Also, NO MORE NOISE!!!!!!!!!

Yes you have to do a drive cycle maybe two to get a reading.
