Well, I have been a big proponent of cleaning the IAC when it's cold and the X is difficult to start. I have been cleaning the IAC for 2 years once every 3 or 4 months because of strange startup conditions. Looks like the IAC finally died, May God Rest it's soul. I have checked www.rockauto.com and autozone but they are both $70ish. Is there an ACDelco dealer that would be cheaper?

I will replace it once I get tired of reving the engine until it warms a little, but when I go to replace it I would like a cheaper alternative. I guess I am just getting cheap now that the X has over 135000 on it.

are you sure it's the IAC that is dead? if you have to rev your engine until it warms up after a cold start you probably need to look into getting the 00m12 recall fixed. you won't qualify for the recall so it will cost you some $$ but that sounds like your problem. Your IAC may be bad as well.. but most likely it's the 00m12 (intake manifold gaskets)..

How was it acting on its last days?

I think mine is about to crap out as well, when it is cold it barely idles like around 300rpm- then it jumps up to 500rpm when the engine gets warm.

I am thinking that it is slowly fading out. No stalling though.

Did yours go out the same way?

I am going to buy a new Motorcraft replacement for $72. Tried a Napa Echlin and it sucked, thought it did have a 12 month guarantee. To bad I lost the damn receipt.

it will idle for 15sec to 2 minutes when cold without holding the throttle down, then it just sputters and dies. On restart it does the same thing over and over again until I hold the throttle down and rev it up a little for a few minutes. After that it runs like a champ.

I'll check the 00m12 scenario, but it doesn't do it unless the temp outside is (just and estimate) 40ish.

yeah.. that's the 00m12. replacing the IAC may not be a bad idea but the 00m12 is probably what your problem really is.

I have been searching for a thread that contains instructions on doing the 00m12 yourself. I have replaced seals inside the engine a long time ago...like 20 years on my Chevy Monza 4 banger. I might be willing to try to replace the seals/gaskets myself if I have a little instruction. But alas I haven't been able to find a thread with the info I need.

dave- this is what you're looking for.

I also have a question. I've been trying to narrow down my problem, which i think is probably the lower intake gaskets as well. When i start it after it has sat for a while and is totally cold, it starts just fine, but when the revs decrease (usually to around 1000ish) the engine sounds almost like a diesel or like it is lobing on a huuuuge cam. It almost sounds like half the cylinders are missing and the whole car shakes. It will stall if I dont rev it in park, but when I put it in gear itll idle at like 1200 RPM until it warms up, then it will idle normally. I had the Bank 1 & 2 lean codes a while back, but it hasnt come back on. Once the engine warms up, itll idle just fine at about 650 or w/e is normal. Do you think this is the lower intake gaskets or something else? The car runs fine otherwise. Thanks!
Jonathan

From what I've "heard" it could be the lower intake gasket but search for IAC sounds, When the IAC goes bad it sometimes gives a roaring sound which some people say sounds like a deisel. There is a thread with a sound clip with the sound of a bad IAC.

BTW Thanks for finding the thread.

No Problem. I dont think its the IAC as I replaced it with a new one from rockauto last winter. Basically it idles and sounds like its running on 3 cylinders under 1100 RPM. I think i'm going to replace the upper and lower intake gaskets when I get home for winter break. Has anyone had a shop do this, and if so, how much did it cost/ how many hours did it take them? I'm probably gonna invest in a torque wrench and do it myself though.. but we'll see.

Check out this site. Mike H. gives step by step directions for fixing the 00M12 issue along with pictures.
