I have the 60/40 bench in my X and am building my own console. Since all my speakers are run off amplifiers, I thought about powering one of my old Polk DX7's or Infinity References off the headunit and placing it in the console near the ashtray and heater controls kind of angled. Would this sound good or should I just mount my tweeters in the kicks? Thanks

It wouldn't really be a center channel speaker. It would just be another speaker. Center channel speakers are mainly used in home audio for surround sound. But I would say try it. It might work really well.

I thought that because the imaging the door locations give suck, this would help even out the distance between the speakers resulting in better imaging. I'm gonna try it.

There is no center chanel signal with the standard ( non surround sound ) HU.

How do you plan to wire this "center" speaker?

I know that I don't have a center channel on the headunit, but I thought I could just hook up the speaker to either the right or left front lead on the back of the headunit. Then I would place the speaker in the console. The speaker is powered off the headunit, so it's a lot less power than my door speakers, just like a center channel speaker is.

I am confused; if there is no center signal and you are going to use one side signal, don't you you think the sound quality will suffer?

I really don't think they're is an advantage to having a "center channel" speaker unless you have a DVD system and you're trying to create the surround sound effect.

aldive - I think he is saying that none of his speakers are being run off the HU, they're being powered by amps. Therefore, he could use one of the leads from the HU to power the center speaker.

Thats exactly what he is saying.

And I am saying the the sound from one chanell of the HU will sound, shall we say, different.

I would have to agree. Wouldn't hurt to try it, but I wouldn't think it make that much of a difference.

if you want better imaging, why not put some speakers in the kickpanels.

or if you are totally set on having a speaker in the center, why not run it mono off an amp? then you wont have too much left channel sound or too much right channel.

a couple months ago i set up my car for 6.1 channel surround. but i searched everywhere and nobody makes a 6.1 processor for the car. if i do get a dvd player for it, i'll make a 5.1 setup. but until then i just have speakers in my kicks, doors, and where the ashtray was (i took out the ashtray and mounted a pair of tweeters in it's place).

Wow thats a good Idea Leenjen. I never use my ash tray except a place to put a cool PIAA sticker. I want to put some tweeds in after I put in a sub and that would be a good place.
