What is this part (circled in red)? I noticed the hose on the right side was busted and disconnected.

This is for a 98 4.0 SOHC V6 in an Explorer Sport.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

That's the DPFE. It's part of your EGR system. Also the engine shown in the picture is an OHV, not an SOHC.

Thanks! Now can you pardon my ignorance and tell me what DPFE and EGR mean? What is their function, and what side effects could a busted hose have?

Mine is idling rough and misfiring under acceleration.

Thanks again,
Scott

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. DPFE stands for differential pressure feedback ______. Not sure on the last leter. The busted hose will cause a vacuum leak and cause various EGR related CEL codes. The vacuum leak would cause a rough idle but I wouldn't think it would cause a misfire code.

You do have an SOHC right?

What is much more likely is that your intake manifold o-rings are leaking. I say this because Ford has a program to correct this problem on SOHC engines. I beleive you already know of this because of your previous thread.

I was told it was the SOHC instead of the OHV engine b/c of the "X" as the eigth letter in the VIN.

I am aware of the 00M12 program, and will be going to the dealer to try and get the work done, although I'm not sure that's my problem. I also have a rattle during acceleration which may be fixed by the 01M01 program.

But aside from all of that, I noticed this hose busted and disconnected, and I'm wondering if it's causing my current problems. I don't have any EGR related codes, just a lean condition on bank 1 and a misfire on cylinder 5.

I believe you can get those symptoms from the hose being off. There have been a few members who have had those pieces of tubing dry rot or clog and give poor drivability sysmptoms.
I would takes both hoses off and clean thru them making sure they are not restricted or dry rotted, replace them if they are. disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the codes and then drive it to see if it is better.
Search this site for DPFE and you should get some similiar info

Ok, it's definitely the OHV engine, not the SOHC. So 00M12 and 01M01 don't apply to me.

One of the hose connectors on the DFPE is broken off so I'm going to buy a new one, and new hoses as well.

This board kicks major booty! I've already learned a lot in the few days I've joined.

That is incorrect. If you had the Letter "E" you would have the SOHC engine.
It's one of the hoses that has a hole in it. check your hoses.

Oh and Welcome to the site. You will learn just about everything you would ever want to know about your Explorer right here on this site. There is a great bunch of people here, and very knowledgeable too. :)

We have a winner! One of the hoses (the same one that had been disconnected) had a gaping hole on the back side of it where I couldn't see it. Replaced the hose, reset the ECU, and it's running smooth again.

It's still idling a little rough, but I have known for a while that the IAC probably needs replacing (cleaning didn't help) - it howls at me sometimes.

Thanks everyone!
