while my truck is in the shop for accident damage repairs, im gonna have them give me a new windshiled, since i got some stone chips in it about 4-5 weeks ago. they havent spread out or anything, but theyre right in my line of sight, and theyre annoying as hell, and ill have some money to play with from the estimate on my accident damage.

my concern is that i hear people sometimes have leaks when it rains or when they wash their car after some place installs new glass. any thoughts, suggestions, or experiences with this? i trust my shop, but im going to let them know of my concern this week, just they know.

thanks.

ive gotten mine replaced twice before.. as long as the shop knows what they are doing and they seal it correctly, u shouldnt have any leaks. the only problem i had was the rubber seal on the outside dried out and cracked. i just glued it back down.

you mean the weatherstripping? mines in pretty good shape, but ill mention to them to check it out and maybe replace it if they have to.

thanks.

How much does it cost to get a new windshield?

i dont remember.. it was a couple years ago.. i go to place that only does windows and tints, and i think it was 150? not sure

for the OEM glass, which is what im getting, it lists for $211 in my body shops repair book, but they said their glass guy will give them a good price, so if i had to guess, id say ~$175 maybe? and then, if you need weatherstripping or not, and the labor to install it.

Just get a good warranty :)

I wouldn't let the body shop do it unless they're having an outside glass company come in and install it. Windshield replacement is very specialized.

yeah, all their glass work is subcontracted out. i already called them this morning paranoid about leaks, heh. they reassured me that the guy they use is a professional who theyve been using for 15 years, and hes been doing it for about 95 years ;)

Nah , not really for installing new. I have done a few dozen at my body shop. Never one leak.
Now cutting out the old glass and keeping it in tact , now that is a bit more difficult.

I had my windshield replaced about 2 and half months ago for $186 for everything (incl. labor) No probelms and it is an exact factory replacement. It came with a liftime warranty so I'm all set, unless another stone flies up and hits it. The company even came right out to my house and did it in my garage for no extra charge and it looks and fits just the original factory windshield.

have any of you ever tried some of the glass repair places? i have done this b4 with good results... i cant justify the $$$ of a new windsheild when all it has is rock chips...

Most of the time I end up repairing the rock chips with a kit that I got at Advance Auto or Autozone. The current one that I got for $10 has several patches and is similar to the equipment and method that professional glass repairers use. I have also had a professional fix mine as well. Since my weatherstripping is rotting and warping and my windshield has be repaired about 20 times, I may be getting a new windshield as well. The first 7 were from a piece of wood that hit my windshield in January 1999, less than 30 days after I picked up the Mountaineer. In Mississippi that's a long time to keep a windshield.

I put in windshields and all other types of glass at the glass shop I work for. The main steps to make sure they do are:

1. After removing the windshield, make sure they leave a very thin layer of urethane for the new to adhere to.

2. Make sure they use pinch weld primer to cover any bare metal exposed where the new windshield will be laying.

3. Make sure they put glass primer on the new windshield.

4. When they run the new urethane, make sure they don't make any breaks in the bead and if they do.....make them take a fiber stick and mesh it together.

It doesnt hurt to know what your windshield looks like before they start to work on it (maybe even take a picture).

Whatever you do dont slam the doors with the windows rolled up for at least 24 hours.......the pressure will break the seal.....my dumb ass put a new windshield in a Ford Ranger and turned around and slammed the door....I had to reseal it.

Good Luck....feel free to ask questions.:D
