Ok. Here it goes.
I have the stock 4.0 with 177k on it. I know it shouldn't be running like new, but I have a few problems I'd love to fix.

#1 - If it hasn't been started in awhile... like overnight or so, when I start it up, it tick's quickly, and quicker if I rev it. It goes away after a few minutes. Now I can live with that, but I dont want anything getting messed up.

#2 - I still have a BIG problem with the engine bogging down if you accelerate hard. If you press the gas to hard when accelerating, the car WON'T accelerate very quickly AT ALL, and it makes a sort of rumble. I do have a drilled air box, but it has nothing to do with my intake, because I used to have KKM, its not the MAF, that was replaced. Its not the fuel filter, that was replaced. Its not that ERG sensor or whatever either, I replaced that. What else could it be! I just want it fixed! I got it checked one time, and they said it was the MAF, and I got a new one, and that helped, but it still happens.

#3 - I got my brakes fixed lately, but it did this before I got them fixed too.. if you hit the brakes hard, they make a really loud POPing noise.. it never seems to affect anything, but its a loud pop

Thats all, please help! Thanks

Questions #1 and #2:

I would definatly take out your injectors and get then tested and cleaned. I got my truck and it had that similar rumble when you were doing alont and punched it it would pop and rumble. It steadly got better as i got more and more done but the major problem was my injectors they were dripping. not misting.

Question #3:

Of course they will pop on you if you have Anit lock brakes, do they lock up or push back on your foot a bit? I would check my brake fluid and perhaps bleed the system, for good measure.

Estimated costs for injector cleaning would generaly be 20-28 dollars for each injector + a upper intake gasket kit ($58) commonly. Brakes are cheap as hell maybe 3 dollars for some dot3 and Time.

Just my 2 pennies :hammer:

Is your engine throwing any codes?

You might want to look into a fuel system cleaning from a dealer. There is a new one out that cleans the injectors and breaks down and removes carbon from the cylinders. Called a fuel system vacuum cleaning or something like that. Haven't had it done but have heard from others who have and it has made a BIG difference in the running of the vehicle. Runs about $125 in Canada, so should be cheaper down there.

thanks for all the info. I think the injector flush will be worth the investment, I may do that this weekend. Because when I use like STP throttle body cleaner and stuff, it usually helps the bogging some, but it comes back quickly. Where should I take it to get the injector flush done, Im really not a big fan of my local FORD dealership. and what can i expect as a total cost.

as for brakes, its not something i feel on the pedal, its a loud noise, just one big pop. and supposidly i do have rear antilock breaks... could it be them acting up?

LABOR

If you do all the work yourself its not that expensive but if you have ford do it your looking at 500 easy. I would just do i yourself, Im 18 got a tool set from my girlfriend for xmas and i bought a haynes manual, got the injectors out. I got mine COMPLETELY CLEANED not just treated with that gas treatment. I actually saw the difference with my own eyes! BUt like i said its easy. If your gonna do this soon, sooner the better, but if you want pictures and stuff im gonna be taking mine all apart again really soon for a total block strip and im gonna have it sent in and re bored with better guts lol i dont know exactly whats gonna be in it but i heard its good stuff. Like i said befor i think i listed costs right?

gasket kit (58)
6 injectors cleanes (25X6)

OH on more thing if you do do this DONT LOSE THE LITTLE SEATS FOR THE INJECTORS they are a ***** to get. I lost minei have to go the the junkyard and take 3 hours trying to find and disassemble a 4.0 aerostar or X. Ford doesnt even sell the seats for the injectors seperate.

Yng_pnk, I'm thinking of doing this myself. Were yours badly gummed up? How long did it take you?

there is supposidly something new out using some sort of vaccum its a injector flush.. i think its like $80, anyways I want to get it, but I want more ideas on what this could be, so I can fix it, and possibly sell the explorer eventually. thanks

For a little bit more money you can just buy another set of injectors

Yes the reason I was asking is I was going to tell you that ctaking out cleaning your injectors isn't too tough, I plan to do it this weekend.

hmm.. well how much are new injectors.. and how hard to install.

I have seen them on ebay for around 175.I changed them out on my 5.0 and it took me a couple hours but I took the throttle off to do it,I have never done an explorer.Just an idea

There is a guy on this forum that is selling brand new bosch injectors for 115.
