Im new and need answers

How yall doing... i been messing around with cars ever since i could barely go to school...im an import guy but slowly getting into bigger rigs. what transformed me was a 1997 range rover.lol. i fell in love with bigger cars.. than i bought a little 98 ranger xlt. crazy fun truck. no problems.. so now i bought 01 explorer thats a knocker.. i wanna throw in a 04 sohc in there and need lats of advise.. looking forward to you guys teaching me a bunch of stuff! but instead of buying the engine im curious if anyone can help me with trying to fix the engine w/out replacing it.. thanks alot. i used this site many times and decided to become a member.

Hi. If you have the sohc in there and have a rattle its more then likely the timing chain. Very common problem on the earlier sohc. Search around the site and you will find a lot of info on it. Its a costly repair to take it in but also a time consuming repair since you really need to break the engine down.

see what my problem is when i bought it the engine had some serious smugg in it.. i dont think the guy i bought it from changed the oil very often..my old man told me to open up the crankshaft and peek inside see maybe something is wrong there..would that be worth doing or should i just change the whole thing..buddy of mine is selling an engine for 250 out of an 04 ranger. maybe it would be easier to just swap it?..but cheaper to fix..idk

Hmm. For $250 how many miles. If the miles arent bad i actuallly think it would be cheaper to swap then to fix in that case. Is it actually more of knock or a rattle that hear, and from which part of the engine? Also what engine do you have and which does you buddy with the 04 ranger have?

i have a sohc and he got a sohc.. his has only 78k. and the knock is coming from the left side..i pulled the valve cover but everything was fine and in tacked.. when i drove it i felt nothing in performance..but it was really loud and ppl looked at me funny.

Wow for that many miles that engine is a steal. Hell i would buy it just to have a back up engine if you plan to stick with the explorer for a long time. Huh my engine knowlegde is limited. I know if you have the death rattle it usually comes from the front of the engine. You mean your performance is lacking when you drove it?

hah well hes keeping the intake manifold and the harnesses and some little things but i have all that but at the same time ill be spending another 100 on gas to drive to his shop..no what i meant was that i did not feal ANY lack nor and jerk or different vibration..just a loud noise.
